From Press Release:

Binghamton Mets (24-26) at Bowie Baysox (26-25)

AA Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles

RHP Chris Schwinden (1-1, 5.40) vs. RHP Steve Johnson (1-3, 4.44)

Game #51 • Tuesday, June 1, 2010

Prince George’s Stadium • Bowie, MD • 7:05 p.m.

LAST GAME: In a back-and-forth contest in hot conditions at

NYSEG Stadium, errors took center stage in leading to Binghamton’s

7-6 loss versus Akron. The B-Mets were charged

with four errors, which contributed to four unearned runs.

Starter Eric Niesen was roughed up for five runs over 3.2

innings after walking five men. Scott Shaw was the hard-luck

loser. The former starter gave up an unearned run on five hits

over four innings of respectable relief. Binghamton was led by

shortstop Luis Hernandez, who managed a pair of doubles in

five trips to the plate. Kirk Nieuwenhius also added his eighth

homer of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth inning that

temporarily vaulted the B-Mets into the lead 6-5. Aeros starter

Kelvin De La Cruz allowed six runs over five innings and harnessed

a no-decision. Akron’s bullpen was the difference.

Connor Graham fired two, shutout innings for the win and

Omar Aguilar nailed down his second save despite loading the

bases in the ninth inning.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Chris Schwinden will

make his third Double-A start tonight. He was roughed up for

five runs on 10 hits over four innings in a day game May 27

versus Richmond, a losing effort. Schwinden is 1-1 with a

5.40 ERA in 10 innings with Binghamton. He was named a

2010 Florida State League Mid-Season All-Star last week. He

opened the year with St. Lucie (High-A) and went 3-0 with a

1.83 ERA over 34.1 innings. Schwinden spent most of 2009

with Savannah (Low-A) where he was 9-6 with a 3.28 ERA over

115.1 innings. Schwinden was the Mets’ 22nd round selection

in the June 2008 draft out of Fresno Pacific University.

RHP Steve Johnson gets the call for the Baysox tonight. He

was harassed for five runs over four innings in his last start,

May 27 at Harrisburg. Johnson did not factor in the decision

despite issuing five walks. The righty is 1-3 with a 4.44 ERA in

10 starts spanning 52.2 innings and has walked 29 men,

which is tied for fourth-most in the Eastern League. Johnson

made seven starts with Bowie last year and was 3-2 with a

2.84 ERA in 38 innings. He was traded to Baltimore by the

Dodgers along with Josh Bell for George Sherrill July 30,

2009.
