LAST GAME: The Binghamton bats enjoyed a breakout game
Saturday night in New Britain, racking up 14 hits and 13 runs
in a 13-1 whitewash of the Rock Cats. Eric Niesen held New
Britain scoreless over a season-long, six innings with five
strikeouts to pick up his first win of 2010. Kirk Nieuwenhuis
enjoyed a career day at the plate with three hits in five trips,
including a pair of doubles, while driving in six runs. Rock
Cats’ starter Kyle Gibson was roughed up for a season-worst
six runs over 5.2 innings to drop his first Double-A decision.
Jose Coronado joined Nieuwenhuis as an offensive superlative
with three RBI as part of a two-hit day. Mike Nickeas
broke out of a slump at the plate with a 2-4 showing, including
a double and an RBI. Eddie Kunz tossed the final three innings
in one-run fashion to notch his first save of the season.
The B-Mets have now won three straight and New Britain has
dropped eight in a row.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Chris Schwinden will
take the ball for the fourth time this year in a B-Mets uniform.
He was perfect through four innings in his last start, June 1 at
Bowie, before giving up five runs over the next inning-plus
worth of work in taking the loss. The righty was charged with
five runs in five-plus innings on five hits. With Binghamton, he
is 1-2 with a 6.60 ERA over 15 innings. He was named a 2010
Florida State League Mid-Season All-Star after his promotion
to Double-A. Schwinden opened the year with St. Lucie (High-
A) and went 3-0 with a 1.83 ERA over 34.1 innings. He spent
most of 2009 with Savannah (Low-A) where he was 9-6 with a
3.28 ERA over 115.1 innings. Schwinden was the Mets’ 22nd
round selection in the June 2008 draft out of Fresno Pacific
University.
RHP David Bromberg gets the call for the Rock Cats for his
11th start. He has lost his past two starts, including his last
June 1 versus Altoona when he permitted two runs on nine
hits over 5.1 innings. On the year, Bromberg is 2-4 with a 3.72
ERA over 55.2 innings with 28 walks. He starred with the Fort
Myers Miracle (High-A) last season, chalking up a 13-4 record
with a 2.70 ERA in 27 appearances, 26 starts. In 153.1 innings,
the righty struck out 148 and opponents hit just .224
against him. For his efforts, the Los Angeles native was
named the Florida State League Pitcher of the Year. Bromberg
was signed as a draft-and-follow in 2006 after being taken in
the 32nd round of the June 2005 draft by Minnesota
