Nick Evans smacked two home runs in a single game for the second time in his last three contests, but it proved to be all the run-scoring for Binghamton in a 7-2 loss to Bowie at Prince George’s Stadium Tuesday night. The home runs came off Baysox starter Steve Johnson who struck out eight men and allowed just the two runs for his second win of the season.
After Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Luis Hernandez recorded outs, Evans strode to the plate and sat on a Johnson fastball, sending it over the wall in left-center to give Binghamton (24-27) a 1-0 lead.
Evans ripped his second in the fourth. Johnson started him with a center-cut fastball and Evans was waiting on it. His second home run outdistanced the first to left-center, but again it was with the bases empty, making it 2-0 B-Mets.
Meanwhile, starter Chris Schwinden retired the first 12 men he faced and was perfect entering the fifth. Bowie (27-25) designated hitter Joel Guzman broke up the perfection, however, with a bloop single. Two ground balls to the right side moved him up to third with two outs. Schwinden then issued his first walk of the game to Tyler Henson. With runners at the corners, Carlos Rojas smoked a Schwinden offering off of Eric Campbell’s glove at third for a double, plating the Baysox first run. Still with two outs, Matt Tucker tucked a double down the first-base line, scoring two more to vault Bowie into the lead 3-2.
Bowie knocked Schwinden out of the game in the sixth after the first two hitters of the inning singled, putting runners at first and third. Righty Clint Everts entered the situation and promptly surrendered a sac fly to Guzman, upping the lead to two. Three batters later, Tyler Henson singled through the right side, chasing the Baysox fifth run home.
Omir Santos ended an 0-20 drought with a double off the left-field wall in the fifth and Lucas Duda returned from a three-week stint on the disabled list and went 1-2 with a double. The B-Mets were held to just five hits, four of which went for extra-bases.
