6/2/10

DRAFT: - Asher Wojciechowski, Anthony Renaudo, Derek Dietrich, Christian Yelich... and Chad Bettis

Asher Wojciechowski:

6-1 from: - 6-1 from: - http://www.baseballrumormill.com/2010/06/conference-tournaments-conclude-christian-colon-asher-wojciechow/#more  – The Citadel, RHP - Wojciechowski has had some up and down outings recently, but found himself with a good performance on Monday. Asher went eight innings giving up two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out eight. He now sports an impressive 144-31 K/BB ratio in 119 innings this season. Churchill writes that Wojciechowksi "has sustained his stuff deep into games and well into the schedule, making him a probable first-round selection next Monday."

Anthony Renaudo:

6-1 from: - http://pnrscouting.com/rankings_2010_draftboard_pitcher.html  - Though Anthony Ranaudo put together one of his best performances of the spring in a three-inning relief appearance down in Hoover, Ala. during the SEC Tourney, questions surrounding his elbow and his inconsistent performances over the last two months drop him a little further down the list. While a team convinced of his health could grab him earlier, it is looking like the LSU ace will drop to the bottom third of the first round, and potentially to the supplemental round. This upcoming weekend's Regional in Los Angeles could help solidify his status on draft boards -- hopefully he puts together a nice six-inning outing.

Derek Dietrich:

5-28 from: - http://baseballdraftreport.com/  - Top 30 College Third Base Prospects - 3. Georgia Tech JR 3B Derek Dietrich - I’m part of the small but vocal minority that seems to think Dietrich could play a decent shortstop professionally if given the chance, but, seeing as its highly unlikely he’ll ever get that opportunity, we’ll judge him here on the basis of his potential well above-average glove and plus arm at third. There’s very little mystery as to what kind of player a team will get if they take Dietrich early on; he’ll hit with both above-average contact and home run numbers (consistent 20 homer upside, I think), play solid to plus defense (as mentioned), and consistently work hard to improve his overall game. I’m no fan of writers/analysts/scouts/Larry Browns who fall back on the tired cliché “he plays the game the right way,” but, hypocrite that I am, Derek Dietrich simply plays the game the way it was meant to be played. He won’t be a sexy pick, but he’s as good a bet as any player on this list to contribute in some capacity in the big leagues.

Christian Yelich:

5-31 from: - http://www.deepleagues.com/?p=1733  - One of the top prep corner infielder’s in this year’s draft, Yelich is an excellent hitter who posted dominating numbers in high school. At 6’4, he offers remarkable upside in terms of hitting for power. Scouts debate whether he can remain at 3B, as some see him as a prototypical left-handed first baseman. To the extent that “makeup” plays a role, there are many articles giving Yelich tremendously high praise in this area.

Chad Bettis:

6-1 from: - http://pnrscouting.com/rankings_2010_draftboard_pitcher.html  - Chad Bettis, a PnR favorite dating back to last summer (and more recently the Houston College Classic) gets a big bump due to his ability to maintain his big velocity deep into starts and deep into the season. He has been shoehorned into several different roles, but should transition to the pro game as a starter with a nice back-up of late-inning power arm with two potential plus to plus-plus offerings (his three-way fastball and slider). Bettis's change-up has also looked sharped at various points throughout the season
