Gnats edge Tourists 2-1 in 11 innings.
Game three of the four game series between the Asheville Tourist and the Savannah Sand Gnats was played Thursday evening at Grayson Stadium. The fans(1,697) witnessed great pitching from both teams.
Sand Gnats scored in the 1st inning when 2b Alonzo Harris led off the inning with his second home run of the season, a line drive over the left field wall.
Tourists scored their lone run in the 6th: DH Eliezer Mesa led off the inning with a single, stole second and moved to third base on a throwing error by the catcher. Mesa scored on a single by 3b Nolan Arenado to tie the score at 1-1.
Gnats won the game in the 11th inning when cDock Doyle led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a bunt by Harris. ss Wilmer Flores hit a double to score Doyle with the winning run.
Tourists starting pitcher, Tyler Matzek, looked good pitching 6 strong innings:giving up 1 run, 4hits, 2BB and striking out eight. Baseball America Prospect Handbook(2010) ranks Matzek as the number 1 prospect in the Colorado Rockies organization.
Sand Gnat starting pitcher, Jimmy Fuller, had another quality start pitching 7 innings: giving up only one run(unearned), 1BB, 4 hits and striking out seven.
For the game the Gnats had 7 hits. Flores had two doubles and went 2-for-5. rf Rafael Fernandez had two singles and was 2-for-4. Juan Lagares pinch hit in the 10th and hit a double.
Gnats relievers, Erik Turgeon and Michael Powers combined pitching a 4 inning shutout, allowed 2hits, 3BB, 2 strike outs. Powers(2-3) was the winning pitcher
