Tonight: The Gnats begin an eight-game homestand with the first of four games against the Asheville Tourists. The Gnats enter play today two games behind the Augusta GreenJackets for first place in the SAL Southern Division.

Yesterday: The Gnats scored three times in the top of the ninth inning to beat the Rome Braves 5-2. Pedro Zapata began the rally with a single to right field and scored the go-ahead run on a Juan Lagares groundout. Jefry Marte and Cesar Puello also added RBI singles in the inning. Erik Turgeon picked up his second win in relief for throwing 2.1 scoreless innings, while Michael Powers fanned two in the bottom of the ninth to earn his sixth save.

Now Pitching: Collin McHugh will make his fourth start of the year, and his first since May 6th in Delmarva when he gave up four runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings in a game the Gnats lost 5-4. Since that start, in four relief appearances, McHugh owns a 1.59 ERA in 17 innings with strong peripheral stats including a K/BB of 4.75 (19 K/4 BB) and 14 hits allowed for an opponents’ batting average of .222 (14 H/63 AB). In his last outing, he gave up one run on four hits in six innings, striking out seven without issuing a walk the Gnats won 5-4 in 14 innings over Kannapolis. The Mets drafted McHugh in the 18th round in 2008 out of Berry (GA) College.
Vs. Asheville: Tonight begins the season series for the Gnats and Tourists who are scheduled for 18 this year, 14 of which will be played in the second half. The Gnats were 5-7 against the Tourists last year. The Gnats are 13-18 against the Tourists as a Mets affiliate.

Marte Mashes: Jefry Marte has now hit safely in six straight games, over which time he is hitting .360 (9 H/25 AB) with one home run, 3 RBI, 3 BB, 3 K and 6 R. After hitting .189/.302/.270 with three extra-base hits in 10 games in April, Marte hit .248/.331/.359 with seven extra-base hits in 28 games in May.

Top Arms: Savannah’s pitching staff leads the SAL in ERA (2.54), WHIP (1.14) and strikeouts (483). The Gnats have yielded the fewest runs (173), despite throwing the most innings (493.1).

Roster Update: Sunday, RHP Samuel Martinez and LHP Mark Cohoon were transferred to the SSA Brooklyn roster to make room for infielders Alex Gregory and Michael Fisher. Fisher, who began his career as a member of the Braves organization hit .238/.293/.296 (AVG/OBP/SLG) with 17 doubles and two home runs last year in 113 games in Myrtle Beach. He hit .253/.311/.334 with 20 doubles and four home runs in 123 games with Rome in 2008.
