Mets Minors 101: - Tobi Stoner, Mike Antonini, Mike Jacobs, Scott Moviel.. and Fernando Martinez

June 10, 2010

The Mets have just finished drafting over 20 more pitchers, so we should start to see the organization start weeding out certain poor producers in the system. A good place to start might be Tobi Stoner, who threw up another stinker last night (5.0-IP, 5-ER, 5.23) for AAA-Buffalo. Stoner had managed to keep his ERA below four most of his minor league career, but it’s not working for him in AAA. That being said, he still would be a good candidate for the pen, even possibly in Queens. The Mets need to get some of their better pitchers moving up and this should be Mike Antonini’s slot, based on performance.

While we’re talking about Buffalo, let’s not forget that there’s a decent insurance policy their in case Ike Davis runs too hard into the dugout trying to catch another foul ball. Mike Jacobs hit his 7th homer run of the season last night, though he is playing almost exclusively as a DH now. In fact, he hasn’t played first since the horrible showing he had on national TV in that Strassburg game, where he had two errors, and didn’t hustle for a ground ball that resulted in a run. That being said, it is good to have him around.

I had about a fiteen minute conversation with him in the spring one night at Duffy’s and there is no one that had ever been more happy to return as a Met. Jacobs always considered himself a Met and I was rooting hard for him to make it in Queens this year. He had his shot and it just didn’t pan out. Now, with Davis out of the bag, his Queens days could be over again.

Speaking of pitchers that need to be removed for their rotation, Scott Moviel threw up a mess again last night for Lucy (6.0-IP, 4-ER, 6.83) and this slot should go to one of the all-star pitchers in Savannah.

I simply assumed earlier this week that OF Fernando Martinez was rehabbing here, but he continues to remain in the Lucy lineup. Is this a real roster move? If it is, I like it, simply to get the press off him for awhile. Went 2-5 last night and is now batting .333 there.
