Round 49: - RHP - Dillon Newman
3-3-10 from: - link - Belton coach Eddie Cornblum never likes to let a moment go to waste during practice. “There’s nothing worse in life than wasting time,” he regularly tells his players. With 10 of the Tigers’ first 17 games coming against teams that won 20 or more games last season, the Tigers certainly can’t afford to waste any time early in the season. But if they can manage to come out firing on all cylinders, this Belton team has the potential to put together a season for the ages. “Our expectations and hopes are high,” Cornblum says. “The combination of talent and experience is just what you want.” There’s no better example of talent plus experience on the Belton roster than senior shortstop Shane Hoelscher. The four-year varsity player hit .441 last year with seven homers and 33 RBIs to land All-State second team honors. He has signed with Rice. “You talk about a gym rat in basketball, well Shane is the baseball version of a gym rat,” Cornblum says. “You can always find him in the cage working on his swing.” Seniors Seth Alcozer (1B/OF), Kevin Thornton (CF) and Jon Neiberding (1B/3B) and junior Tyler Vail (OF) supply some serious offensive support for Hoelscher. The pitching staff, however, may be the true strength of the team. The Tigers boast a pair of ace senior right-handers in the Baylor-bound Dillon Newman and the UTA-bound John Beck. Vail can also hold his own on the bump thanks to his ability to touch 90 with his fastball, a trait that could make him a dominant closer later in the season.
