Nigel Cooke
Bethune-Cookman catcher Peter O’Brien has been going up the mock drafts lately.

O’Brien wasn’t a favorite of the first mock drafts this year, not being named by MLBProspect and placing only 153rd on the Draft Site list. But his rank began to change when 5 Tool had him as the 30th pick overall, followed by 10th by Toss It Around, and 9th by XMLBScout.

Right now, he’s the 5th ranked catcher, behind Blake Swihart, Austin hedges, Andrew Susac, and Nick Delmonico.

Summer stats: .306/.350/.694…

The good… MEAC Conference MVP… big arm… 6-4, 220, R/R… level swing… very impressive in CNT trials… serious in-game power… good weight transfer… projected to switch to corner outfielder… ability to hit for average… 2010: .386, 20-HR, 56-RBI.

The bad… plays in weak conference… average release… 1.92 with gear one, then 1.95 following month… timing off on slow stuff… could wind up projected as first baseman.

You like big catchers? Would you like one bigger than Peter O’Brien?

One of this year’s stars at the WWBA was 6-5, 215 Blythewood H.S.(SC) Grayson Greiner.

The good: plays defense like a smaller catcher… quick for his size… gets his hands through fast balls thrown at him… committed to play for South Carolina… 4.46 GPA… also plays 1B… arm strength: 82… catcher PopUp time: 1.81… 7.1 in 60…
