The Mack Report – Top 20 Met Prospects, Satin, Feliciano, Padilla, Taka, Elvis

John Sickles ranked the top 20 Mets prospects this past week and here’s #3:

3) Matt Harvey, RHP, Grade B: Love the power arm, but lingering questions about his command keep him from higher grade at this point.

We’re just about on the same page here. I have him as 4th with Reese Havens ranking third.

I’ve heard basically nothing about him since he has become a Met. There was a Harvey sighting in Florida a month ago at the Instruction League, but I couldn’t even confirm that.

I would have liked to see him and the other big Met pitching draft pick, Eric Goeddel, in the winter leagues, but it just didn’t happen. Look for Harvey to start the season with St. Lucie.

In the Winter League…

Josh Satin went 2-4 Saturday with 1-R, 1-2B, 1-RBI. His batting average is now up to .357 and he’s still playing exclusively on first base.

Look, Satin will hit if he plays left out. He is a professional hitting machine. Now, all you have to do is find a proper position for him.

The first base thing is of his own making and will give him a larger negotiation factor someday when he goes up against one other player to be named to the Queens utility squad.

Satin’s only road to starting for the Mets go through second base and you just can’t grab your glove and run out there without the approval of the team you are playing for. Right now, the Chicago Cubs’ Ryan Flaherty is playing there (.333).

Josh will get his chance as soon as Mesa solves their first base injury problems.

Michael G. Baron
OF Jesus Feliciano (doesn’t he ever take a day off?) is playing for the Senadores de San Juan and is hitting .267. His Buffalo teammate, OF Jorge Padilla, is off to a slow start, going 0-5 on Saturday and hitting .095 so far for the season. Ex-Met Tim Hamulack (1.80) picked up the loss.

I noticed an article in the New York Times about the fact that the Mets made their first offer to P Hisanori Takahashi’s agent and it’s a one year deal.

I also noticed that the article said the offer came before Sandy Alderson was aboard as General Manager.

Let’s keep an eye on this one. It could be an early indication how Alderson operates. I would hope he maintains the direction that 2012 is the year he should be basing all decisions on.

The Mets don’t need to sign an SP5 to a 2-year contract.

They have 3,741 of them in minors they can pay minimum to do that next season.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to list 16-year old 3B prospect, Elvis Sanchez, as the 100th top prospect on “The Keepers”.

Sanchez hasn’t done anything as a Met so far, but neither has many of the guys that are ranked below the top 100. Baseball America’s comments alone about his power and arm strength are good enough for me.
