We’ve been saying the same thing for years about this position. It’s David Wright’s to win or lose.
That being said, he has seemed to begin a decline which may become an issue before his next contract, but he will definitely be the third baseman for the Mets in 2012.
Zach Lutz had a very unlucky year, breaking his finger, and being hit by baseballs a couple of time. He will return to Buffalo for 2012 and will be the emergency call-up if something happens to Wright. I don’t think he has enough to replace Wright and I’m sure the Mets continue to light candles that either Jefry Marte or Aderlin Rodriguez could develop into a decent fielder as well as a dominant hitter. Rodriguez is showing his pop, but neither fields close to what is needed from a major league third baseman and Marte is simply not developing fast enough as a hitter either.
Latin prospect Elvis Sanchez almost got his feet wet (.157), though he did produce more walks (62) than hits 31) and had a strange stat line that included a .367 OBP and a .222 slugging percentage.
Right now, there is no one in the system stepping up as a future replacement for Wright. Renew the contract, boys.
Probable Cuts: None
Probable Starters: AAA – Lutz, AA-Marte, A+ - Rodriguez, A – Harrison/Lucas

I still hold out hope for Campbell. If you look at his second half, it was very impressive. Even during the first half he showed great plate discipline with tons of walks. My candle is lit for this guy.
