From my buddy, Joe D., at Mets Merized: - Chris Young’s agent ran into Corey Brock of MLB.com today and told him that he should be ready in time for spring training. Young has made just 22 starts over the past three seasons and it’s become increasingly difficult to rely on him for anything.
Still, this could be really good news for the 2012 Mets. Yes, Young has been down for the count for the majority of two years, but when he’s healthy, he’s basically spot on. A one year deal with a second with a team option could really take the pressure off speeding up the development of the “Big 4” coming up through the system. The Frankie2 2-year deal puts off any decision that has to be made in 2012 on Jenrry Mejia. The Mets can now keep him in the warm weather of the extended camp of St. Lucie until the all-star break, and only then decide where he is a future closer or stretch him out for a run at the 2013 rotation. The signing Young could take the pressure off of speeding Zack Wheeler as well. Matt Harvey and Jeurys Familia can end the year in Queens with a Young, Niese, Dickey, Pelfrey, and Gee still there. Hell if Young IS heavy, dump Pelfrey in December and roll the dice.
