Q and A with Conrad Youngren... and Cordero and Centeno

Conrad Youngren asked:

Mack, you've recently posted "keeper" summaries on Albert Cordero and Juan Centeno (my thanks once again). How would you compare the two (to each other, not to Yadier Molina or Manny Sanguillen)?  I saw Centeno in Brooklyn and was impressed with his athleticism, arm & contact (I know, that was Brooklyn), but never saw Cordero play.

Mack:

First of all, I can’t tell you how much fun it is to answer questions this way. Many other sites now do the same. Even the ones that are 95% cut and paste. Like MetsBlog.

Both Cordero and Centeno offer the Mets some future hope.

Albert has a nice bat and really stared to shine at Savannah. He finished the 2011 season hitting .286 and has never hit below .267 in his 4-year professional career. He concentrated much more on hitting for average which did cost him some slugging points, but his bat speed remained while hit plate discipline improved.

Cordero’s problems are in defense. He did throw out 40% of the runners that ran on him, but he also had 17-E, and 14-PB.

Centeno is a completely different story.

You would think that a catcher in the Mets system that hit .318 could get more than 157 at bats in a season, but that’s the most (2011) Juan has had in his five year Mets career.

His 2010 Brooklyn stats were amazing: .371/.417/.517/.934, yet he still was platooned.

The Mets chronically platoon their catchers, especially at lower levels, but I think there is a good chance he will play most of the games in Binghamton in 2012. He bats left, so he isn’t a potential platoon partner with Josh Thole. The worst thing that has happened to him this fall is the resurgence of hitting by Francisco Pena, who will play for the B-Mets also.

You know me Conrad. I want an excellent defensive catcher on my team, with a strong arm, the ability to manage a young pitching staff, and hit around .250. Right now, both of these guys have potential, but I’ll reserve comments until one or both of them get 400 at bats in one season.

Is there any info on the young catcher from puerto rico that they signed this past year for 500 grand. I would think, that although really far off, he'd have to have some really good tools.

you've mentioned this before...

is it Jose Garcia or Dionis Rodriguez?

I think it's garcia. I just remember he was 16, I think, a catcher, and they signed him this year for half a million. That's like, supp 1st round money. So you'd think he's pretty good. I mean, it's a crap shoot anyway, 16 year olds, but he's there somewhere.

He was signed in July.

Not much of a bat yet, but has excellent defensive skills.

Was flown to NYC in September and took BP in front of the Mets brass.

Switch-hitter.

That's all I know at this point other than the fact he will play for the DSL1 team in 2012.
