Ernest Dove - Finally !!! I wanna be like Ike.

Who else would be at bat in that situation? 5 game losing streak. Bases loaded. Bottom of the 8th. Tie game. Something positive just happened. And then.............It's Ike Davis at the plate. I guess now the question is this: Did Ike just have a 'Jason Bay' moment?

I bring this up for two reasons. One, because by strange coincidence, the still struggling Bay just had a walkoff hit tonight for Seattle. And two, because that's kind of what Jason Bay did last year as a Met. He would have that one RANDOM big hit, and the entire organization, and its fans, began to dream and feel as thought he finally broke out of his slump. So, with that being said, what should we make of this hit by Ike?

Usually, as a lifelong Mets fan, I would stay negative and see this as a random occurrence. But this time I won't. And here is why. The biggest thing I took from Ike's at bats tonight is the simple fact that he didn't always SWING !!!!

Ladies and gentlemen, Ike Davis showed patience at the plate. Can you believe it? I know, me neither. But that's exactly what happened. There was Ike, at the plate, all night, actually taking some of those off-the-plate, in-the-dirt, breaking balls.

I do not recall seeing one flailing swing tonight by Ike. I say, do not recall, because I honestly still consider this night a dream, and I don't always remember anything accurately from my dreams. Ok, enough sarcasm, back to Ike. Maybe he is finally on to something. Maybe all the confidence, support and hopes of glory have started something here tonight.

Everyone wants Ike to succeed. Everyone wants Ike to be that guy who hits 30 homers and 100 rbi's every year. Everyone wants Ike to man first base for another 7-10 years. Now, is it because we all think Ike can do it? Or is it because the Mets honestly don't have anyone else to play the position full time?

Whatever the case, I think all Mets fans are just happy that this actually happened. In what has become a season of disappointment, finally something to cheer about. And maybe the near future will continue to be a bit of a bright one.

We may be a couple weeks away from Zack Wheeler. We may eventually see our new catcher of the future (even though Buck just did it again tonight). But tonight is all about Ike.

Mets fans always need something positive to hang their hat on. Tonight we have the return of Ike. May it last for the remainder of the season. Bring on the home runs. Bring on the continued strong pitching. Bring on Zack Wheeler. Bring on the excitement.

After a night like this, it makes sense to bring on the Yankees. Crazier things have happened. Maybe Ike will begin a homerun streak. Maybe Ike will continue to take bad pitches. Maybe Ike will be the guy the organization said he would be.
