April 4th 2014 -- Mets 4, Reds 3

Friday night at Citi Field, Lucas Duda  seized the day after being named the starting first baseman (for  now)…as he crushed a pair of 2 run homers off Reds starter Mike Leake as the Mets beat the Reds 4-3. Jenrry Mejia made his first start of the season and was stellar. Mejia struck out 5 of the first 6 Reds he faced and went  6 innings he allowed just 4 hits 1 run, 1 earned he walked 5 and struck out 8. Mejia threw 99 pitches and he was a tad wild as the 5 walks attest too.  The Mets bullpen however, continues to be problematic.  John Lannan came on in the 7th to spell Mejia and the south paw allowed a two run homer by Jay Bruce to make it a 1 run game. Bruce was the hitting star for Cincinnati, having driven in their first run in the 3rd with an rbi single.  Daniel Murphy added a pair of hits on the night (he also committed his 3rd error in 2 games) But the good outweighed the bad as the Mets get in the win column for the first time in 2014. Kyle Farnsworth got the Mets out of the 7th and retired the Reds in the 8th. Jose Valverde pitched out of some trouble in the ninth and picked up his 1st save on the year.  Mejia notched the win. He’s now 1-0. The Mets now stand at 1-3. Saturday afternoon it’s game two of the series. Dillon Gee (0-1 5.40) looks for his first win of 2014. Johnny Cueto (0-1 1.29) goes for the Reds.

I've got a lot to say about this game (in my morning report)...

And, I'm thrilled for the first victory...

But Lannan, followed by Farnsworth and Valverde is just not going to hack it for me this season.

I know the team is currently without talent depth and replacing these three with Black, Edgin, and Walters may not have the same result, but, in my book, more long term progress would have been made.

Do we have a first baseman? Leave him in for the entire month of April and then ask me.

Hey, somebody want to do me a favor and buy some shortbread so my wife doesn't commit suicide?
