Flexen Allows Five Earned & Cruz hits Gnats’ Third Home Run
Savannah, GA – The Lakewood BlueClaws scored six runs on three swings to defeat the Savannah Sand Gnats 6-2 Saturday night in front of 2,686 fans at Historic Grayson Stadium. Savannah rallied to get the winning run to the plate in the ninth, but Patrick Biondi’s hard line drive to third base was caught to end the game.
The Gnats (1-2) scored first: in the bottom of the first, RF Victor Cruzado capped a 10-pitch at-bat by belting a full-count offering over the right field wall for his first home run of 2014. It was the third homerun in three games for the Gnats.
The lead did not hold up long as the BlueClaws (2-1) pull ahead for good in the top of the second inning. Savannah starter Chris Flexen walked Zach Green and two outs later, Larry Greene Jr. Lakewood catcher Gabriel Lino followed with a double to center to score both runners.
In the fourth inning the BlueClaws began a rally with two outs and the bases clear with two singles and a walk. 1B Willians Astudillocleared the bases with a three-run double down the leftfield line.
All five runs Flexen allowed came with two outs in the inning. He went 4.2 innings, allowing five runs on five hits, three walks and three strikeouts in his Savannah debut.
The Gnats closed to within 5-2 with a run in the fourth inning when DH Matt Oberste doubled to left, driving home LF Jared King.
