The New Hampshire Fisher Cats racked up 15 hits, including ten off starter Tyler Pill, and handed the Binghamton Mets a 9-4 defeat at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The loss snapped Binghamton’s five-game winning streak.
For the first time in the series, the Fisher Cats were the first team on the board. After a pair of two-out singles in the opening inning against Tyler Pill, Kevin Nolan drilled an 0-1 pitch over the left-field wall, giving New Hampshire a 3-0 lead. The Fisher Cats padded their lead on a sac fly by Kenny Wilson in the second.
Binghamton cracked the scoreboard in the third against Fisher Cats starter Casey Lawrence. Travis Taijeron led off by ripping a double to the left-field alley, took third on a fly out and scored when Kyle Johnson threaded a single through the hole on the left side.
The Fisher Cats stretched their lead to five with another two-out rally in the third. Nolan started the charge by bouncing a single up the middle. Mike Crouse followed by stroking an RBI triple to right-center field. Peter Mooney made it a 6-1 game with a run-scoring single to right.
In the fifth, New Hampshire chased Pill from the game with a pair of singles and a walk with two outs. Jack Leathersich inherited the runners and walked Mooney, forcing in the Fisher Cats’ seventh run of the game.
Lawrence settled in comfortably after Johnson’s single in the third. The righty retired 10 of the last 11 batters he faced, including a stretch of nine straight. In his first start of the season, he allowed one run on five hits and struck out four over six innings.
New Hampshire added to their lead on a home run by Ryan Schimpf in the seventh and sac fly from Wilson in the eighth.
The B-Mets trimmed away at the lead against the Fisher Cats bullpen. Matt Clark led off the seventh with a homer against Tyler Ybarra and Binghamton tacked on two against John Anderson in the eighth, but the comeback bid fell five runs short.
Pill (0-2) was tagged for seven runs on ten hits over 4-2/3 innings in the loss. Lawrence (1-0) earned his first career Double-A victory.
