Binghamton 5 - Akron 4

Gilbert Gomez scored the winning run on a Louis Head wild pitch, as the Binghamton Mets walked off against the Akron RubberDucks, 5-4, at NYSEG Stadium Saturday night. The run scoring play capped off a 2-for-3 night for Gomez, who scored three times and hit his first home run of the year.

Binghamton scored three runs in the final two innings, after being held to one hit in the first five frames.

Three B-Met relievers combined to shut out the RubberDucks over the final 5 1/3 innings, surrendering two hits while striking out 10. It was Binghamton’s fourth walk-off win of the season.
Akron got on the board in the top of the first inning against John Gant. After a one out single, Gant walked the bases loaded. The RubberDucks then struck first on a Jordan Smith sacrifice-fly to left field. The next batter, Destin Hood, singled in a run with a base hit to left field.
The B-Mets quickly cut into the deficit, as Gavin Cecchini homered to left field on Shawn Morimando’s third pitch of the game. It was Cecchini’s fourth home run and Binghamton’s only hit in the first five innings.

Akron added on to their lead in the fourth inning. Hood led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout. He came in to score on a Jeremy Lucas single to center field. Gant balked in a run later in the fourth inning, coming out after 3 2/3 innings of work.

Trailing 4-1, Binghamton got back on the board in the sixth on Gomez’s first career Double-A home run.

Binghamton’s bullpen continued to put up zeros, keeping the B-Mets in striking distance.
Joseph Colon relieved Morimando to begin the eighth inning and was met by a Gilbert Gomez single. With one out, Jared King singled to push Gomez into scoring position. Binghamton got within one run on a Josh Rodriguez single to left field, snapping an 0-for-16 drought in the process. Binghamton left the bases loaded, trailing 4-3 after eight innings.

Louis Head came on for the ninth, attempting to lock down his first save of the year. After getting the first out on one pitch, Head surrendered a single to Jairo Perez. Gomez then drew a walk and the B-Mets tied the game on an RBI double from Gavin Cecchini down the right field line.

With the infield drawn in, Head induced a King ground out to keep the game tied. Rodriguez drew a walk to load the bases for Jayce Boyd with two outs. Head bounced the first pitch of the at-bat to the backstop, allowing Gomez to score the winning run.

Wheeler (2-1) earned the win for his two perfect innings of relief. Louis Head (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs in 2/3 innings. Vic Black pitched a scoreless seventh inning on rehab, allowing one hit while striking out two.

The B-Mets (24-18) continue their series against Akron Sunday, with a 6:35 PM first pitch at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton RHP Seth Lugo (2-1, 1.93) gets the ball against RHP Mike Clevinger (1-2, 2.82).
