The Sand Gnats did not have a baserunner in the first four innings Monday, but used five walks to score four times in the fifth inning on the way to a 4-3 victory over the Augusta GreenJackets at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats improved to 2-3 on their seven-game homestand.
In the fifth, down 3-0, right fielder Wuilmer Becerra began Gnats' (14-23) rally with a single to left. Catcher Tyler Moore drew a walk to force home the first run of the inning. The subsequent batter, Jonathan Johnson singled into right to drive home two runs to even the game at 3-3.JC Rodriguez earned another walk, the fourth of the inning by Augusta starter Nathanael Santiago, whose night ended with the bases loaded. Reliever Raymond Montero entered and walked John Mora to force home the go-ahead run.
Savannah starter Scarlyn Reyes (3-3) worked seven strong innings to earn the win. He struck out four and walked on. Reyes has now won three consecutive starts.
The GreenJackets (17-19) scored the game's first two runs in the top of the first inning. Catcher Aramis Garcia doubled home the first run and then scored on Skyler Ewing's RBI single up the middle.
Augusta added an unearned run in the fourth.
