NEW MET - OF - Bryce Brentz

The Mets have claimed outfielder Bryce Brentz off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Michael Baron says that the Mets have yet to determine where Brentz will report, which lead to speculation that Juan Lagares might be being moved.

I LOVE THIS SIGNING!

Those of you that are veteran Mack's Mets readers remember when I fell in love with this kid well before the Red Sox picked him in the first round of the 2010 draft.

There simply was no room for him in the Pirates outfield and they were out of options. THIS is why Sandy loves to pick the bones.

Can he still hit?

Well, last year, for the Pawtucket Red Sox (not the PCL), he hit:

31 home runs  -  85 runs batted in

There is one catch here...

If the mets want to send him to vegas. They will have to sneak him first thru the other teams that could claim him

Interesting.

Or they could withhold Phil Evans.

It's a nice pickup but not necessarily the Bryce that fans hoped the Mets would add to the roster :)

This player reminds me of Andrew Brown: A powerful hitter in the minors, who for whatever reason, never got to the majors.

But:
- Even if they don’t actually give Evans the spot to keep this guy, what happens when a Conforto comes back?
- If they trade Lagares to make room for this “catch”, is this how winning teams are formed? Trading a better player to make room for a lesser one?
- If they choose to put him through waivers, certainly someone else will take a chance. But, if no one does, he needs to become a free agent first. So, since the Pirates were trying to sneak him through waivers, what makes Sandy think he can?

Best answer? Treat this guy like a Rule 5 pickup and trade him and get something that you can stash and won’t upset your competitive balance of better players.

When did winning take precedence over money with this franchise? Bentz would be minimum wage. Next year you're staring at a $9 million obligation on Juan Lagares. Enough said.

Texas -

Good points, but here's another one...

Brentz came out of college as a 'can't miss' player. He obviously did, but he did become a productive minor league slugger.

Can be do well in a diminished role in the majors? Yes, I believe he could easily be the SP5/DH/PH slugger every team needs.

Lagares, with the return of Conforto, will also enter a diminished role. He can't slug like Brentz but he can outfield him and offer a team an alternative in center field.

Texas, great GMs build their pipeline through various ways... draft... international signs... and frankly, trading players for prospects in another team's pipeline.

Lagares can get you at least one Top 100 MLB prospects, maybe 2.

Imagine another top 100 prospect who played at the AA level last year, and an additional top 100 prospect that played at the A+ level, for Lagares.

Mack, I want to tell you “you win”, because you won me over. But, if we are looking for a championship season, we have to keep Lagares. He’s too valuable to the staff. I ask what would the Yankees do, because they’ve built a machine rather quickly.

Tell you what: Replace Lagares with den Dekker and AGone with this kid. Take the two prospects, put Bruce at first full time, and let’s roll. Everyone’s replaceable.
