Don't feel all ecstatic about the money saved. Yes, that $20 million can be put to something else. Remember now that his trade value has just plunged below the floor and you will be stuck with him until the bitter end.

Yep. So much for a creative trade package sending him to Colorado to off-set a trade for Arenado.

Remember he tested positive the year the Mets traded for him - which was even more reason their top draft pick should not have been included.

Reese I’m sorry but I am so ecstatic right now. This couldn’t have been scripted better to start the offseason.

1) Cohen new owner
2) cano suspended and open up more money for us to spend in probably the best offseason to have money
3) sign as many top free agents as possible

They probably will buy him out for the remaining 2 years of his contract. So he probably has played his last game as a Met. Hopefully he gives them a deal and breaks down the remaining $40 million over 10 years so he doesn’t hit our cap so hard over the next 2 years.

Go sign DiDi and Morton with most of the money saved from this years Cano contract

Yeah this is good for the Mets. Lets face it his defense is clearly on the decline, it was really noticeable in 2019. Playing McNeil/Gimenez up the middle and Smith at 1st just makes them so much better. Giving Guillorme some time at 3rd with JD would help as well. I think we already expect an upgrade for CF & C and it could catapult the Mets into being one of the better defensive teams in the league. Cano hit well his past season but well he was on roids...he is so far past the right side of 30 he is only going to get worse. I dont expect to ever see him in a Mets uniform again.

C - TBD
1 - Smith
2 - McNeil
3 - JD/Guillorme
SS - Gimenez
LF - Nimmo
RF - Conforto
CF - TBD
DH - Alonso

Tim does a really nice job discussing Cano.

Even beofre this bust, there was zero chance including Cano in a trade to any team besides the Yankees. He has no trade protection. This is dumb by Cano and bad news for him, but it's excellent news for the Mets. This offseason has been a bonanza and they haven't even acquired a player yet!

Even before this news, I had put DJ LeMahieu at the top of my FA list. He not only is a perfect addition at 2B, but stealing him away from the Bronx makes the taste sweeter.

Go get him, Sandy!

I am much more on the Lindor wagon now. I can just see a keystone combo of Lindor and Gimenez. Talk about lights out defense!

As for LeMahieu, next to Bauer, he is one of the 'be careful what you wish for' free agents this year. He has played his entire career in Colorado and Yankee Stadium and his home/away splits are just plain scary.

In his league leading batting average of .348 with the Rockies in 2016, his OPS at Coors was 1.064; on the road 0.747.

In 2019 with the Yankees he stood at .977 at Yankee Stadium, .818 on the road (not too shabby either, but).

In the shortened 2020 season, his Yankee Stadium OPS was an out of this world 1.265, while only a pedestrian .759 away from home.

His 2016, 2019, and 2020 seasons were the only three seasons where his overall OPS was over .800.

While we read about how nobody can shift on him and he developed a lot of power, nobody took advantage of their home cooking (or short RF line) better than DJ.

I would be very leery that he will never approach his 2019 or 2020 levels if he leaves the Bronx. (that and the fact that he will be 33 years old in July - not prime age for second baseman as his fielding has already been slipping and he never did have good fielding stats at 3B)

Great points about DJ 1969. The word is that he wants 5 years nad the Yankees - who should know him bets, want to give him just 3. I like the player but would be leery about a 5 year contract as well.

Astute analysis ‘69. Very smart thinking.
