John from Albany - Mets Add Players to AAA Roster not 40 Man MLB

As expected, the Mets did not add any players to the MLB 40 Man roster to protect them from being selected in the MLB Rule 5 draft scheduled for December 10th.

They did however, add a number of players to the 38 Man AAA Roster.  This will prevent them being selected in the Minor League Portion.

Here is the updated Syracuse Roster:

Pitchers: Daison AcostaYeizo CamposTrey Cobb; Oscar De La CruzTony DibrellHarol GonzalezColin HoldermanStephen Nogosek; Dedniel NunezAdam OllerMichel OtanezMarcel RenteriaRyder RyanCorey Taylor; Arodys VizcaínoJoshua Walker; Joe Zanghi

Catchers: David Rodriguez

Infielders: Luis CarpioEdgardo FerminShervyen NewtonJosé PerazaJose PerozaWilmer ReyesYoel RomeroDavid Thompson; Will ToffeyJeremy Vasquez

Outfielders: Quinn BrodeyJohneshwy FargasWagner Lagrange; Mallex Smith; and Tim Tebow

Here are the other Rule 5 Eligible players that will be subject to both portions.  Remember, teams do not have to add the minor league Rule 5 Draftees to their MLB Roster.

First, very happy that Wilmer ReyesJose Peroza, and Yoel Romero, were added to the AAA roster.  As I have stated here in the past, I saw all three players in Brooklyn and liked them a lot.  While other teams could add them to their 40 Man rosters, since the highest they have played is Single A, it is not likely as they would have to stay on that team next year.

I was surprised the Mets left two good catching prospects unprotected: Andres Regnault and Wilfred Astudillo

At 21, Andres has a 29.9% caught stealing rate in his career, .292/.328/.489 (.817 OPS) last year in Kingsport.

Wilfred Astudillo, 20, 77 games and 651.2 innings with 37.5% caught stealing in his career, .267/.323/.408 (.731 OPS) last year in Kingsport.

I think they may be taken by another team in the minor league portion.

Also, OF Ranfy Adon who showed speed and power in Brooklyn last year and over last winter was named the fastest Met player in their minor league system. I like him a lot.  However, when he was left off the instructional league roster this fall, I did not think he would be protected.

In comparison, Wilmer Reyes not only was on the Instructional League roster but some felt he was the MVP of the camp.

Jose Peroza on AAA roster? I doubt he stays there. That would be an enormous leap for someone younger than Bret BATY.

Of course we also have Jose Peraza, just to confuse everyone. He’ll be just 27 next year with 505 major league hits already. Career .270. Could be useful.

Wilmer Reyes needs a strong year at AA or AAA to show what he can really do. Hopefully he will excel.

I think Astudillo and Renault both need a full year, and next year would be real Rule 5 risks. Maybe they lose one in the minor league portion.

Catchers will always be in demand, and expect the Mets to lose both. But, you can’t protect everyone and with Nido, Sanchez, Mazeika, Alvarez, and whoever they sign above these guys, and then protecting every pitcher worth protecting, their just isn’t room at the inn. In fact, they may lose Bossart too. Jeff Wilpon will be crushed.

Tom, Peroza need not stay in AAA, just so he isn’t taken by another team. Rafa Adon may go also,

Think former top prospects that couldn’t stay healthy, Guerrero and Lindsey, would be taken? If I were another team, I’d take a shot and hope to get lucky!

Great points Tom and Gus. One thing I noticed was that there still are extra slots available in Syracuse so maybe the Mets plan to look at other clubs in the Minor League Draft portion as well.

How often has players lost in the minors part of the draft mattered where a team lost a really good player? I assume its very rare.

Yes Dallas. Very Rare. The biggest names ever picked in the minor league portion have been Justin Bour (now playing in Japan) and Alejandro de Aza (last seen playing in Mexico). I always worry about the Mets losing good players in this portion, but they have not already. Tom repeatedly thinks I worry about the Rule 5 draft too much...and he has been repeatedly right so far.
