As we had yesterday on Mack’s Mets, Robinson Cano Suspended for 2021 Season.


Mets.com: Major League Baseball revealed Wednesday that Canó has received a 162-game suspension without pay for testing positive for Stanozolol, a performance-enhancing substance. Canó will miss the entire 2021 season.




NY Post: “Cano tested positive for Stanozolol and will forfeit his $24 million salary for next season. Cano will still have two years and $48 million remaining on his contract after the ban…it’s another strike on the trade that brought Cano to the Mets, and it’s another blow to Cano’s reputation.”


Deesha Thosar NY Daily News: “According to published reports, there was far less PED testing in baseball than normal this season because of the coronavirus pandemic. The league converted a Utah lab it normally uses for anti-doping testing into a testing lab for the virus.”


Mike Vaccaro NY Post: “With one announcement, the good times continued to roll for Mets fans, very few of whom were ever even remotely sold on Cano. He was an aging star who was allergic to running out ground balls even in his youth. His arrival cost the Mets 12 to 15 years of Jarred Kelenic, among the most exciting prospects in the game. And, by the by, he was a PED cheat with an 80-game ban already on his dossier. And he cost $24 million per year. Through 2023.”


Metstradamus: “But it shouldn’t mean that we give Brodie Von Monorail a pass in our celebration of salary relief. Anybody with half a brain would have realized that trading a first round draft choice for a closer and an aging second baseman who had already been clipped for performance enhancers was a hairbrained idea at best.”


Greg Prince: Faith and Fear in Flushing: “The news is not a terrible bruise to the Mets’ aspirations, but it’s too bad anyway. Cano was part of the team we came to embrace in 2019 and gave us a lot of hitting in 2020, hitting that added up (.316/.352/.544) and hits that still count as having happened.”


Joel Sherman NY Post: Robinson Cano’s entire career is now in question.

John Harper SNY.TV: Fallout from the Cano suspension, including who MLB sources think Mets should target with the extra money: “He’s got a lot of choices but I’d take a run at LeMahieu for starters.”



NY Post: Mets, Yankees set up for DJ LeMahieu war after Robinson Cano ban.


Andy Martino SNY.TV: Even after Robinson Cano suspension, Yankees more likely than Mets to sign DJ LeMahieu. Mets now have an opening at second, but other options are more likely.


SNY.TV: The most logical solution could be simply letting Jeff McNeil become the regular second baseman...Another option could be to use Andres Gimenez at second base and have McNeil play third. This assumes that Gimenez is not part of a deal this offseason to acquire a player such as Cleveland Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor.


Bradford William Davis NY Daily News: Not only is McNeil the best second baseman on the team, and arguably the best hitter on the team (.319/.383/.501 career line). McNeil’s offensive excellence has made him into a utility man, frequently playing out of position due to Cano’s lengthy contract anchoring him to second.


NY Post: Steve Cohen can’t wait to spend Robinson Cano money in MLB free agency.



Joel Sherman NY Post: “The answer is he [Cohen] might spend to land the best catcher in the game, especially since he now has a $20.25 million savings by not having to pay Cano in 2021. But history suggests Cohen should use his money to pay J.T. Realmuto more money for less years.”


SNY.TV: Analyzing the Mets' payroll situation for 2021 and beyond. “The Mets have flexibility to not only go after stars via free agency or trade, but extend their own core pieces.”

Mets Junkies: Mets Catcher Fix if Realmuto is not an Option: “Calling up Austin Bossart or David Rodriguez or even second overall prospect Francisco Alvarez especially, in particular Alvarez, couldn’t hurt the team if it’s only for an experiment or for until a better catcher is made available to the team. Who knows? You might find a hidden treasure in one of them at the catcher position down the road. In 2019, Alvarez, for two teams, hit 7 home runs and 26 batted in with a .312 batting average.”

Jesse Orosco, the 24-year veteran who is the all-time leader in games pitched at 1,187, agrees to a one-year contract with the Padres estimated to worth $800,000. The 45 year-old lefty reliever, who started his major league career with the Mets in 1979 after being traded by the Twins for Jerry Koosman, is the oldest player in the majors.

Francisco Alvarez turns 19! Incredible considering that we've heard about him for so long. May he be in a Mets uniform by 21 at the latest. Why not at age 20?

Orosco - Koosman trade. Combined, they pitched 43 seasons. I wonder if that is some sort of record.

I'll reserve my Cano comments for 8 AM today.
