METS SIGN RHP SAM McWILLIAMS

 

 

FLUSHING, N.Y., November 20, 2020 – The New York Mets today announced that they have signed RHP Sam McWilliams to a one-year contract.

 

McWilliams, 25, was part of the Tampa Bay Rays 60-Player Pool in 2020. The 6-7, 230-pounder has compiled a 30-35 record with a 3.85 ERA (229 earned runs/535.0 innings) in 109 games, 94 starts during his six-year minor league career.

 

McWilliams was originally the Phillies eighth-round selection in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft. He went 7-9 with a 4.10 ERA (60 earned runs/131.2 innings) in 26 games, 19 starts in 2019 for Montgomery (AA) of the Southern League and Durham (AAA) of the International League. McWilliams was named to the Southern League mid-season All-Star team.

He was terrible in AAA in 2019 in 44 innings, but threw 88 AA innings that year, allowing just 3 homers and a 2.05 ERA.

He was 23 then. It took another big guy, Randy Johnson, a while to get rolling. When he was 23 in the minors, he walked 128 in 140 innings.

We have to keep reminding ourselves that 2020 was a real loss, in terms of watching guys evolve.

I am not intimating he belongs in Johnson's class, but another Sam McDowell would be nice LOL
