Mack's Mock Pick - # 36 - SS - Ethan Murray

Ethan Murray

Mack's spin -

I will get some push back on this early pick.

I expect Murray to put up a great year this season (as of 3-5: .345, .920-OPS) and vault up the mock boards before draft day.

42. Ethan Murray, SS, Duke

Consider Murray a stand-in for any number of other collegiate middle infielder types who have shown a little something at the plate. In this case, "shown a little something" is accurate in more ways than one. Murray followed up a strong freshman season (.305/.391/.445) with an abysmal sophomore effort (.222/.377/.352). If he returns to form, he has a chance to put himself on an early round track with a possible big-league future as a utility type.

Murray was a bit of an under-the-radar prospect out of high school considering he played on the same Virginia high school team as highly-touted Clemson catcher Adam Hackenberg. The Duke infielder got plenty of attention after a 2019 Freshman All-American season, however, hitting .305/.391/.445 with five home runs and six stolen bases while starting all 58 games at shortstop. Whether or not he is a full-time shortstop in pro ball is another question, as some scouts see him as more of a utility type who could have value playing all over the infield. Coaches praise his ability to throw from any slot and from multiple angles, while scouts believe he could be fine to play shortstop in a pinch but isn’t quite dynamic enough to be a regular at the premium position. A below-average runner, Murray showed solid hitting ability and some pop out of a 5-foot-11, 180-pound frame, but he doesn’t project to ever be a huge home run hitter. Without any loud tools to boast, Murray impresses more for his solid raw hitting ability, reliable defensive ability and solid baseball IQ.

Ethan Murray, SS (2021): Murray is an old-school, no-frills shortstop who catches everything and makes good contact.

Mack, Murray would have to really excel this year for me to be interested at all.

Frankly, I have no interest either but he is a top 50 pick.
