Top Mets pitching prospect Matt Allan consistently brought the heat in his Grapefruit League debut today, sitting 96-97 mph with his fastball. Ran into some bad luck in allowing 2 runs/4 hits, but also got multiple swings and misses on his four-seamer.

Thosar NY Daily News: “Over the past two games alone, the Mets have
committed seven errors in the field. The club has amassed 10 errors overall in
their seven exhibition games...In one of their latest defensive blunders
Monday, J.D. Davis was in the shift between first and second when Alex Avila
knocked a grounder right at him. Davis scooped the ball but threw behind first
baseman Mark Vientos. Rojas said Davis was in position and he rushed the play.
It was only the fourth inning, but Davis’ fielding error cost the Mets their
third unearned run of the afternoon.”

Post: Mets in talks with Maikel Franco after Jose Martinez freak injury. “If
the Mets were to sign the 28-year-old Franco,
it could give them another candidate for the third-base job, albeit one who is
challenged defensively. Last season
Franco was minus-one in outs above average as a third baseman, according to
Statcast, placing him in the 24th percentile in MLB. In 2019 he was minus-five
in outs above average as a third baseman. Franco…slashed .278/.321/.457 with
eight homers and 38 RBIs in 60 games last season.”
ICYMI, the Mets expect to begin Francisco Lindor extension talks this week.

Good stuff - not worried about the errors on March 8.
McNeil's quiet bat is not an accurate indicator, either.
Yamamoto is likely ticketed for AAA.
Guillorme will play well WHEN he gets to play.
Allen struggled in his inning, but yes, he is 19.
My thoughts on Nido vs. Mazeika at 8:00 AM.
Tom - If the Mets were a good fielding team over the past few years, I would not be worried by a few ST errors. Since that has not been the case...I think the core problems with the Mets over the last few years remain.
As other bloggers are saying today, Guillorme needs to play everyday. Give him 2 games a week at SS, 2 a week at 2B and 2 a week at 3B - or maybe just one a week at SS to give Lindor a rest and an extra game at 2B or 3B. That will make the infield defense and pitching a lot better.
John - I disagree - here is why.
Lindor is elite - he will want to play 155 games if healthy. Jeter, in a 17 year stretch, played 150 or more in all but 3 seasons. Hall of Fame type talents know they can't sit a lot and make the Hall.
Likewise, if McNeil is healthy, he needs 150 games at 2B. Guillorme will do a lot of defensive replacement work, and if the Mets do not get Maikel Franco, he will squeeze in 20-30 starts, more if injuries necessitate it. The picture won't be clear until closer to opening day. Guillorme will have to hit like heck to expand that. Maybe he will.
I for one am thrilled that the first time we need a replacement fill in due to injury, that player will no longer be a .180 Wilpon Special. Or a 12.00 ERA pitcher. My brother reminds me often of when the Yanks in the 1990s had elite veterans to play part time. The Nets just signed Blake Griffin - some guys will lose minutes but when a championship is a clear reality, some guys won't get a lot of time.
Is that fair to Luis? No, but it is the reality of stacked offensive teams. If he played for a Pittsburgh, he'd probably start and be a decent overall player. I'd rather have too many good players than too few.
Defensively, we will clearly not be the best. Offensively, though, we might be the best. I can live with that. But the defense will tighten up over the next 3 weeks. And JDD is on base 6 of 11 times so far - I am confident that JDD will bounce back offensively and improve defensively. If not, he will sit a lot.
I have not seen any clips of JD's error. I read that it was made during a shift, when he was positioned between 1B and 2B? Is that correct?
I just hope that Villar doesn't steal Guillorme's playing time. Historically, this team has been very slow in appreciating the contributions of this player.
I don't go into the season worrying about the playing time of reserves. There are always injuries, opportunities.
Jimmy
