Tom Brennan - METS' SCHEDULE MAKER WAS NO DOUBT A PHILLIE PHANATIC

We all find ourselves taking it a day at a time during the pandemic.

Perhaps, like me, not looking too far ahead.

So for the first time, I looked ahead...at the regular season schedule, which you guys probably already have fully committed to memory.

Anyway:

The Mets open with 3 games in Washington, DC, and then, starting in the season's 4th game, 3 games in Philadelphia playing the Phillies, first of the three starting on April 5.

Get used to seeing the Phillies and their Phanatic.

By May 2, the Mets (weather permitting) will have played the Phillies NINE times in the Mets' first 27 games.  And 9 times in a stretch of just 24 games.

He...why not just play them the first 19 games of the season and get it over with?

And the Mets face the Nationals 6 times in the first 27 games.

That density of games against fairly geographically local opponents has to be COVID-related...shorter trips presumably equalling less exposure and all.

But that is a heckuva lot of games against division opponents in such a short stretch.

The arch-rival Braves, meanwhile? The Mets see them for the first time on May 17.  Which, again weather-permitting, is the 40th scheduled game of the season.  Marlins? 3 times in April, next time after that being right after the May Braves series.

2021.  It should oughta be interesting.

Just as long as the Mets play the Yankees seven successful games in late October, I am good with all of it.

I think your COVID theory is on to something here.

Mack, I think we'll have our Phil of the Phillies very early on, that much I know. Let's go 9-0 in those games, so we can watch Bryce Harper get tossed 3 times in fits of anger.
