Mack's spin -

I have had a lot of good ink come across my desk lately on this guy.

James Madison had a 11-17 record last season, playing against teams like VCU, William & Mary, and UNCW, Still, DeLauter led his team in almost every offensive category, including an out of this world 1.231-OPS.

I'm starting to really fall in love with this guy and have raised him on my board as the 5th outfielder.

Could eventually sneak into the first round.

6. Chase DeLauter, OF, James Madison

James Madison played an abbreviated 28-game schedule, so DeLauter flew under the radar despite hitting .386/.508/.723, but he broke out by pacing the Cape Cod League in slugging (.589) and tying for the home run lead (nine) this summer. He has huge left-handed power thanks to his 6-foot-4, 235-pound frame, bat speed and strength, and he also sports one of the more disciplined approaches among the players on this list. He runs very well for his size, with his solid speed giving him a shot to stay in center field and his strong arm fitting well in right if needed.

Best Power Tool: Chase DeLauter, OF, James Madison | Orleans Firebirds (2022)

Why: This was a neck-and-neck race between DeLauter, Armstrong, Rushing, and Wilken. If you asked me who will hit the most home runs in the big leagues I’d say Wilken. If you ask me who had the best example of actualized game power it was DeLauter. He hit the ball as hard as anyone and did it with greater frequency. He showed pole-to-pole power and he doesn’t sell out for it.

Elite plate discipline and looking to elevate and do damage. Does not chase pitches out of the zone. Plus in-game power to all fields. Plus arm from OF due to his time spent on the mound at James Madison. Above average defender from the OF. Athletic, and moves well given his size in CF. Long-term profiles as a corner OF.

 OF Chase DeLauter (James Madison)

Much like Zach Neto, Chase DeLauter came to the Cape looking to prove himself as more than a big fish in a mid-major pond. The James Madison outfielder took a second to get himself acclimated, but once he did there was no doubt that this was a bonafide stud. At the plate, DeLauter has a controlled swing that covers both halves of the strike zone and relies on a strong lower half to drive the ball pretty much anywhere he wants. His monstrous .297/.397/.589 line with nine homers speaks to the impact he left on the league. Defensively, he started as Orleans' right fielder, but after an injury to Rhylan Thomas he moved to his more natural position in center field. With strong reads, good closing speed and a plus arm, he projects long term in CF. Make no mistake; this a potential top 10 talent in the 2022 draft with at least a puncher's chance of going first overall.

11. St. Louis Cardinals

Chase DeLauter, OF, James Madison

DeLauter is a physical specimen. At 6-foot-4, 230 pounds, the product of Martinsburg, West Virginia can really bang at the plate. He burst onto the scene in 2021, slashing .386/.508/.723 with 6 homers and 7 stolen bases in just 26 games. He worked 25 walks and punched out just 14 times. DeLauter has showcased his talents in the Cape Cod League as well, surging confidence in his abilities with big league scouts. Believers see an above average hitter with easy plus raw power. He has a disciplined eye at the plate that should translate to pro ball well. In the field, it’s at least a plus-plus arm in a corner with rangy speed and sound fundamentals. James Madison hasn’t produced a first round pick since 2007. That may change…
