IN FOCUS - Gregory Soto, Jose Castillo,

Gregory Soto is a Met!

Soto is a whiffgenerating, barrelavoiding machine whos been plagued by command issues pretty much his entire career. If Jeremy Hefner can work his magic with Soto watch out!

Mets Analytics                                  @MetsAnalytics

What will Gregory Soto bring to the Mets?

This season since AJ Minter was injured on 4/26, the Mets rank:

23rd in relief LHP innings

16th in relief LHP ERA

16th in relief LHP barrel%

Soto is one of the better lefty relievers in all of baseball, and he fits the Jeremy Hefner mold of keeping hard contact out of the air!

The Mets pitching staff ranks 5th in MLB with 7.9% barrel rate allowed this year, overall but that drops to:

9th for their LHP

14th for their relievers

17th overall since losing Minter

Soto fits into the coaching staff’s identity while strengthening that identity’s personnel weak spot - his 4.3% barrel rate allowed is 94th percentile, and he’s only allowed 2 home runs all season.

It will be interesting to see how Mendoza utilizes Soto in the pen - he’s been elite against lefties, almost certainly due to his ability to suppress their hard contact. In this new age of relief pitching, specialists can’t be quite as specialized!

Also worth noting his high walk rate is similar across both splits.

The Mets paid a premium for Soto, but David Stearns and Jeremy Hefner have earned a certain level of benefit of the doubt in their pitching evaluations too!

Excellent breakdown of Soto’s analytics. I don’t think people realize we got an absolute stud who we can work with to help elevate his game. Like we did Canning this year, Manea and Severino last year. Butto and Nunez out of the bullpen, Hefner has a strong track record which shouldn’t be ignored.
