Morning Thoughts
It’s “Day Off Thursday” and I’m feeling
pretty good right now.
A new writer, X favorite ANGRY MIKE (@angrymike) is joining Mack’s Mets and
will also create and administrate a dedicated X account for us that will
promote all the posts on this site… knowing him, he should be up to speed and
producing content sometime next week.
I’m also happy with the direction the
Mets are going right now. After all the shit that has gone down this season,
they are back in first place, Francisco Lindor is no longer hitless, Pete Alonso hit a monster homerun,
and Brett Baty is starting to look like the guy we all hoped
he would be when he was drafted as the 12th overall pick in the 2019
draft.
Don’t look at the year-long stats here. It’s
the last 30 days that matter here. It’s 20-69, 3-HR, .290/.359/.493/.852. 10-11
home runs this year at Citi (sorry Tom). He also now has a 2025 1.8-WAR. And his
defense, both his defense on second and third has stabilized.
Lindor, Alonso, and Juan Soto are three great hitters.
Brandon
Nimmo is establishing himself this year as an, at least, above average
hitter. So is steady Eddie Jeff McNeil. That’s five, the
number I have always said all great teams possess. I trust any of these five
whenever they head to home plate with a bat in their hands.
Well, it is my belief that Baty is
becoming bat #6.
And, I’ll tell you something else…
catcher Francisco Alvarez is going nowhere for the rest of this
season. He may not break the red apple out in center, but he’s going to hit a
lot better than he did before he was sent to Syracuse.
Add to that the almost steady Starlin
Marte and… well… as I you can see, things are starting to look like this team
is going to finish strong. However, I do ask for one favor here. I love the
come from behind shit, but how about a good ole 7-1 lead after three so I don’t
have to run back every time my prostate-less system causes me to jet to the John.
I simply do not understand why David
Stearns can’t promote any combination of Dom Hamel, Blade
Tidwell, Brandon Sproat, Jonah Tong, or Nolan McLean and make two or three
of them one inning relievers for the stretch drive. All team controlled and
full of talent. You can stretch them back out in the off season. Hey David. Hey
Steve. Have one of your minions run the one inning stat lines on these guys.
You don’t have to go shopping.
God pinned The Hulk halfway through me writing this. Damn. He was 71. I’m 78. But he lived on rhoids. I only did blow, weed, two packs of Newport Lights, and five Jack and sodas a day. The good news is I did quit all that 40 years ago. Something tells me Terry Gene Bollea didn’t. Thanks go out to Keith Richards for putting me on that diet.

Mets ‘active’ in center field
Can Jeff McNeil handle
a continued increase in workload in center field?
League sources describe the Mets as active in the market
for center fielders while adding that New York is not behaving as if it views
upgrading the position as a necessity. At the least, it appears the Mets are
taking a little bit more time to figure out their motivation level.4
Such a stance echoes Stearns’ comments Monday regarding
the position. Stearns acknowledged center field is “the one position where we
haven’t gotten the level of production we anticipated coming into the year.”
But that doesn’t mean he’s hell-bent on finding an external solution.

Ryan O’Hearn,
Baltimore Orioles: Everything we just wrote about Mullins can be rinsed and
repeated here with Ryan O’Hearn. The Orioles are unlikely to extend him a QO,
and he is going to be a free agent this winter. The time is now to sell. The
good news is that O’Hearn is tearing the cover off the ball this year, angling
for his first-ever All-Star appearance.

Taylor Ward, LF, Angels
The Angels
insist they’re buyers, but come the deadline, I expect them to not make the
same mistakes they’ve made in the past as they should be sellers; if not, a
buyer-to-buyer trade involving Ward would still make sense. Ward, 31, is
hitting .217 with a .292 on-base percentage but has mashed 20 homers and driven
in 57 runs. He is under team control through 2026. A trade to the Royals would
make a lot of sense.

If they get hot with a Rea litter in Marte, Angry Mike won’t be as angry. Welcome aboard.
If Drew Gilbert had hit better, he’d be getting called up. I’d prefer Jett Williams as a call up, and bolster the pen with a deal or two.
My first call up would be Sproat to pen followed by Gilbert
Mack, that would be worth a try. Ross may very well be ready shortly, too.
EVERY hitter deal HAS to factor in if the acquirers’ long drives will be HRs in Citi. Or just flyouts to the track.
At present I don't see any of the CF options as an upgrade (offensively) over McNeil. Maybe take a flyer on Bader as part of a platoon if the cost is low. At this point I wouldn't mind seeing Gilbert as a part timer.
After the deadline they should call up a pitcher and move Holmes to the pen before they burn him out. It's pretty obvious he is fading after 3 innings.
I like Danny Columbe for the pen, shouldn't cost a kings ransom.
I would promote Gilbert for pop pinch hitting and late inning defense
Naylor to Seattle
Sad part is he would have been a perfect replacement for a departed Pete... but that remains undetermined and is he comes back having Naylor on your payroll is just plain stupid
Naylor might be the crack in the trade dam that starts a cascade of deals.
I am hoping for a Luis Severino trade so it won’t cost us too many prospectS And we absorbed the contract. Then, hopefully he does well, and we can trade him in the winter
Yankee prospect Spencer Jones got promoted to AAA three weeks ago. He has an astonishing 13 HRs in 19 AAA games since then. We’ve got (yawn) Ryan Clifford, hitting .225 in AAA. We never get prospects like Jones. The Yankees do.
