SAVAGE VIEWS – ADIOS, SENOR MACK
Arrivederci, Au Revoir, Das Vidaniya or, in other words, goodbye.
I’ve decided now is the
time for me to stop trying to write a weekly post for Mack’s Mets. I’ve become
extremely disillusioned with the current Mets management, especially Carlos
Mendoza. While I do believe David Stearns is the right guy to be heading up
baseball operations, I’m puzzled by his recent actions and inactions. I’m tired
of being the one who continues to write negative opinions.
RECENT
CONCERNS
· On Friday, Sean Manaea started with
the understanding he would pitch not more than four innings. There was no backup
plan to bring in someone to finish the game. Instead, a batting practice
pitcher left over from the Home-Run Derby was brought in. The results were predictable.
· On Sunday, once again David Peterson
was pulled early even though he appeared to have something left in the tank. But
the decision to relieve Garrett in favor of Diaz was a disaster. Carlos seems
to lack confidence in certain players.
· The decision to bat the
underachieving Vientos in the middle of the order while having Baty bat eighth
or ninth defies logic. Imagine bringing in a Suarez and batting him behind the
likes of Taylor and Torrens. Doubt if he would be more productive than Baty.
· Nice
to see Alvarez being called up. Should have happened prior to the Reds’ series.
Bet they have him batting in the lower third while Vientos bats fifth.
· Hard
to understand why AA players such as Williams, Tong, Parada and Morabito have
not as yet been promoted. Also, time to bring up Sproat to add depth and length
to the roster
· What
frightens me is that we will likely overpay to fix our alleged shortcomings.
· It’s
amazing that playing 50/50 ball since the First of May still has us in
contention.
WRIGHT JERSEY RETIREMENT
David Wright
deserved to be honored for his achievements while wearing a Mets jersey.
Remember those good old days when David and Jose were manning the left side of
the infield. Got to say I would rather have a Wright and Jose on my team
instead of Lindor and Alonso.
OK,
SHERLOCK, WHAT ABOUT HOLMES
Well,
Watson, the answer is quite simple. If you check the farm, you will find a
Sproat growing that needs to be reaped. Pairing Sproat with Holmes could produce
an incredible duo. Sproat gets the first five innings and then Holmes finishes
up. The experiment of Holmes as a SP needs to end now. The pen needs to be
fortified and having Holmes and Raley together with the two new relievers added
by the trade deadline should make us competitive for the balance of the year.
THE
FAB FOUR AND MOVING FOWARD
As we look forward
to 2026, it pretty much a given that Nimmo, Lindor, Soto and Alonso will form
the base lineup. Aside from Soto, this foundation is also a weakness. We have
witnessed over the past few years how each of Nimmo, Lindor and Alonso seem to disappear
for long stretches of time. Lindor and Soto have forgotten how to get the bat
on the ball with runners in scoring position. I like Baty and Alvarez to stay
on and perhaps add Jett Williams to the mix at second base. This projected
lineup would need someone to patrol CF (Benge?} and DH.
SAYONARA
You will
hear from me from time to time, hopefully in a more favorable light.

So now I have no one to do "old" jokes with
Folks, this was a shocker and comes with no warning.
If a team one half game back can't peak your interest then I would spend more time on the links and playing with your great great great great grandchildren
Had to get one more in
Thank you for your time served and I will simply consider you in the portal now, possibly coming back as you see fit
Big loss for the site
And me
You will hear from me from time to time. My obsession with the Mets runs deep.
Sorry to see you go Ray.
Your departure leaves me without any protection in the lineup. Now I'm the only "Debbie Downer" left.
Thaks for everything.
I'll still be making comments.
Ray, if you don’t do your scheduled once a weeks, do ad hoc articles as the mood strikes. Don’t stop altogether. I ALWAYS have enjoyed your analytical, no-puffery posts.
Until then, say hi to Abner Doubleday for me when he stops by. LOL
BTW, I had a “tribute to Ray” with my article comments about Baty this AM:
“DO NOT LOOK NOW…
Baty hits his 11th, up to .237. Lindor meanwhile is down to .248. How is such proximity possible? Baty was 90 points below Lindor on May 12. Not anymore.
When will they intersect?
In fact, at Baty’s current season pace, he’d have the same # of HRs and RBIs as Lindor, if he had as many at bats as Lindor’s 400 at bats.
Ask Ray, and he would have said, I told you so about his guy Baty.
Ray, I am in 100% agreement with you on Mendza. His obsession with pulling starting pitchers early from the moment he was hired has annoyed me from the beginning of his tenure. He will not stretch pitchers out as 90 pitches seems to be his magic number. This needs to be 100-110. I think we all knew Holmes was going to have some issues as he was converting from the bullpen to starting and was going to blow past his highest IP before the halfway mark. Mendoza has never pushed him past 85-90 pitches so what we have is someone who is alway done right at or right passed 5 innings, time to let him finish the year in the bullpen as a couple inning reliever. Time to give Sproat or Mclean a chance. I also agree with you on the batting order, Mendoza just baffles me. If they dont snap out of it and show some fire it might be time for a manager and hitting coach change.
Easy fix to bullpen and rotation. Put Holmes back in bullpen. Call up McLean and Sproat and put one in bullpen and the other in rotation. Call up Butto when rehab is done.
Aptoklas, I like it.
Dean, spot on.
Dean totally agree with you but is it Mendy calling the shots?
