In 55 at bats, starting in the last two game in June, the exiled Alvarez has done this:
10 HRs, 3 doubles, 22 RBIs. And 19 for 55.
That is not a misprint.
10 HRs in 55 ABs.
While Torrens and Senger in Queens have 2 HRs in 228 at bats.
Second question: Should he be called up?
Answer: That’s blatantly obvious, isn’t it?
WE NEED SPROAT!
His pitching was mediocre most of the season. Not anymore.
On Saturday night, he fanned nine in five innings, and allowed only one hit and one walk.
Just A fluke game?
No. Last 23 innings, 8 hits, 1 unearned run, 27 Ks.
Call him up, too.

I get cranky when the Mets play like the Rockies for several weeks. My next stage is “disinterested”. Fix this team.
Sproat looked really sharp on his 9 Ks. Hit 99 on a few. I personally like 99.
In his last 30 games, Francisco Lindor has hit .197. Maybe we should send him down, too.

We talk so much about core bats. Now the bottom half of the lineup comes through. Even in the 9th... first and second with no out for Lindor, Soto, and Alonso. Poof.
You always talk about great teams picking each other up game to game. Bad ones screw up don't. And cold teams just can't seem to put it all together anymore. It has not been fun following or writing about this team over the last 30 days. The thing I find I hate the most is Stearns' refusal to TRY and corrent that with great prospects that are ready to help. He also won't promote other great prospects to the next level so they can eventually get here quicker.
I pride myself as being the guy on this site that says nice things about this team and who makes the decisions. They are truly testing me right now.
No problem, I threw in this shorty, as these two topics remain pertinent. I do understand that with the trade deadline rapidly approaching, that can hamper call ups, as some guys could be trade chips.

I think Sproat, Tong, McLean and, yes, Alvarez are ready to help right now. They are cooling their jets in the minors.
And, Mack, don’t mistake a few hits at the bottom of the order as real production. Only Baty do I have reasonable confidence in. The others? Everyone gets a hit here and there, eventually. No one bats .000.
Great on Mrs. Mack. Did she get the brace of full Tommy John? Only kidding.
I was out yesterday and missed the game. Apparently, Torrens and Mauricio made brutal errors. Hey, if you can’t contribute with hits, contribute with bad errors.

Should we consider using Alvarez as the DH for the rest of the season? Let him concentrate exclusively on hitting and not worrying about catching. Give him the off season to work on his defense at catcher. Torrens handles catching this year where he is a strength. Thoughts?
Agreed on both players. One thing you didn't mention was that Sproat turned his season around when Alvarez started catching him. His 18 inning scoreless streak was achieved pitching to Alvarez. Last night he threw to Matt O'Neill and still did pretty good. Sproat is ready.
D J, this team needs to hit. Torrens as catcher makes sense if the team is hitting well. It is not. I try to minimize weak bats in line up when hitting dries up. A trade is needed. Marte and Winker are fragile, and the younger hitters and Torrens might be hitting OK for the White Sox, but not for a contender.
I agree, John. Alvarez could have sulked. Instead he’s been the best hitter in all of AAA, and did he inspire Sproat? I don’t know, but Sproat’s drastic turnaround coincided with Alvarez.
Not keeping Jose Iglesias seemed logical, but it was a mistake, even though he is only hitting .240 for SD. He brings fire and joy. His replacements do not.
From time to time you will see Mauricio make a highlight reel play but will fumble routine and basic plays. He reminds me of Rosario that way.
He got Sproat to finally throw the heater aggressively - up an in if needed to keep hitters honest.
