CARSON BENGE
I suggested in a comment on Monday that Jett Williams might be more advanced than Tyrone Taylor and his promotion to AA straight to the big leagues ought to be considered.
I also suggested that Carson Benge through Sunday was hitting so well after his promotion to AA that the Mets might want to consider promoting him straight from AA to the majors.
I have recently suggested that the incredible Jonah Tong could have helped the Mets more than some of David’s painful parade of AAAA relievers, too, with Tong going straight from AA to the bigs.
Someone taking the contrary view suggested that guys never go straight from AA to the majors.
Special guys do, though.
Juan Soto barely even played in AA (8 games, to be precise) before his MLB call up. AAA? What’s THAT?
Spencer Strider threw all of one inning in AAA before his call up.
Both of those extraordinary talents did extremely well in the big leagues immediately.
Jett, Benge, and Tong might not be on the level of those two super elites.
But thru Sunday, they’ve done THIS:
Jett had been averaging a .410 OBP since the start of May.
Benge, after going 0-6 in his first 2 AA games, had since gone 19 for 49 (.388).
And Tong, starting with his 3rd outing of the season, had thrown 75 IP, allowed a ridiculously low 32 hits, and a miniscule 10 earned runs, and rung up 121 Ks, a simply stunning output.
Knowing the Mets, I know that suggesting that these guys get promoted straight to the majors is absurd.
The conservative Mets just won’t do it, for the same reason they won’t bring the fences further in. They are risk averse to a fault.
However, I am decidedly bewildered as to why these three guys are not already promoted to AAA.
Frankly, we all should be mystified there.
Someone suggested that Kevin Parada be immediately promoted to AAA.
Parada was so cold through mid May, but his 140 superb at bats since, through July 20, really do warrant a promo to AAA.
I personally would consider that, but might want to see him experience a little more joy of success in AA first. August 1?
You cerebral hombres and senoritas, what do you think?
DO NOT LOOK NOW…
Baty hits his 11th, up to .237. Lindor meanwhile is down to .248.
How is such proximity possible?
Baty was 90 points below Lindor on May 12. Not anymore.
When will they intersect?
In fact, at Baty’s current season pace, he’d have the same # of HRs and RBIs as Lindor, if he had as many at bats as Lindor’s 400 at bats.
Ask Ray, and he would have said, I told you so about his guy Baty.
And Alvarez? On base 3 of 4 times in Monday’s win. See, he IS needed.
And quite capable. And not just in Syracuse.

Mike Trout in his last 22 games with Angels is .274/.439/.534. If Angels were willing to eat a whole lot of his remaining salary, would he be worth pursuing?
Alvarez’s double in the 9th barely missed going out. Maybe Citi Field should be renamed “Barely Missed Going Out” Park. Slumping Pete flied out to the track in “Barely Missed Going Out Park”, too.
Didn't Michael Conforto get promoted from Binghamton to help lead the Mets to the postseason in 2015?
Tom,
I agree, the young blood needs to be promoted. This team needs a spark to provide some excitement. Whoever is ready, I'll leave that decision to the Mets scouts and GM, but get the prospects to Citi Field.
Steve, yes, good point.
D J, this organization embraces veterans. David Stearns’ next job can be to head the VA.
Sad post from Ray today at 9am
His last
My guess is that Stearns will not make any bat adjustments until the trade deadline passed. Probably wants to see if the team's short hand needs can be solved that way and what prospects they will lose.
Bring them all up and see what they can do before the trade deadline
Mack, meanwhile it seems Yanks have real interest in Eugenio Suarez. You know, the guy with 36 HRs, 86 RBIs. Could we use that, even bearing in mind he’d probably have 10 fewer HRs playing in CITI.
Love him but I'm not giving up a ton for a rental
On the Mets, Suarez would bat eighth after Taylor, Torrens and Vientos and his numbers would drop.
