Fresno, Calif. - Las Vegas 51s hitter Juan Lagares hit a home run to start the game, and it was only the beginning for the 51s offense on Thursday at Chukchansi Park as the Fresno Grizzlies were rolled by the 51s 14-3. Fresno committed four errors - all in the second inning - and allowed 16 hits in the game.
Grizzlies starting pitcher Andrew Kown bore the brunt of the 51s offensive attack as he surrendered nine runs (six earned) over 1 1/3 innings. The right-hander allowed two home runs, both of which occurred in the first inning. After Lagares hit the leadoff solo homer, Zach Lutz hit a grand slam into Home Run Alley to make it 5-0.
In the second inning, starting pitcher Collin McHugh flew out to start the frame, but the next seven Las Vegas batters all reached base safely to chase Kown from the game.
Mitch Lively spelled Kown and struck out the first batter he faced. Lutz, though, followed with a fly ball to left field, which was mishandled by Roger Kieschnick to score Wilmer Flores for the fourth run of the inning.
Travis d'Arnaud, Andrew Brown, and Josh Satin each drove in a run in a three-run third inning for Las Vegas. Brown and Satin had back-to-back RBI doubles with two outs.
The Grizzlies broke up the shutout with a pair of RBI doubles by Kieschnick and Juan Perez in the fourth inning. Carter Jurica later drove in a run with a double in the ninth inning.
The 51s wrapped up their scoring with three consecutive hits to start the sixth inning. Brown doubled to lead off the frame and was driven in by Satin's double. Lutz plated Satin with a single to make it 14-2.
Brown finished 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI, and three runs scored. Satin also had two doubles, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. All but Omar Quintanilla scored a run among Las Vegas starting position players.
Dan Runzler and Steve Edlefsen each threw a scoreless inning to extend their season-opening scoreless appearance streaks to three and four games, respectively.
Sandy Rosario threw two innings, allowing two runs on three hits, for the Fresno bullpen.
McHugh picked up the win for Las Vegas. The right-hander struck out five and walked none over seven innings.
