I
had fun yesterday spending some time with the Sand Gnats. I always try and
spend some time with the hitters and CFers and give them a preview of what
Grayson Stadium is like.
I’ve
attended games here starting in 1990 so I have a little as they say, ‘history’
here.
Grayson is a hitter’s nightmare and a fielder’s terror. It leads all of
baseball in producing the least amount of runs, hits, and home runs. The heat
never turns off an it’s Africa-like humidity drives the ball down before it
goes over the fence. You just can’t attempt to increase your bat speed. Your
only chance is follow-though and perfect bat to ball contact and follow-through
I’ve
watched many Mets over the past seven years try to master this field and none
ever hit 20 or more. Aderlin Rodriguez did hit
33, but that was over two full seasons.
You
spray hit at Grayson and you take a lesson from Matt
den Dekker. There is plenty of outfield out there and you can easily
lead the league in doubles with the right approach.
Fielding
wise (as I shared with Brandon Nimmo) you have
to respect that the humidity will screw with the depth of perception you
normally give to a ball coming off a bat. It’s a big outfield with plenty of
gap for balls to fall in. It’s played best when you play it to your natural
talent. Den Dekker moved best going away, so he played in. Slower outfielders
tend to play deeper and play in. I told Nimmo to play to his game before the
July humidity sets in,
Media
day is fun. It’s the one day you can shoot the shit a little with some of the
players.
It
looks like 3B Aderlin Rodriguez may not make an
opening day roster, meaning the Zack Wheeler thrown
ball off his wrist caused him an OD slot. Hmm…
P
Scott Kazmir may go on DL with abdominal strain

- @JohnMackinAde7s - @WheresKernan - Brandon Nimmo says
'hey' from Savannah... says he likes you
Kevin Kernan@WheresKernan21m - He
should :) He has right personality for NY RT @JohnMackinAde:
Jorge
Castillo - @jorgeccastillo12m - Mets
announce Shaun Marcum didn't pitch in simulated
game today after he reported neck pain in warmup. His status will be reassessed
tmrw. So, basically, I wouldn't expect Shaun Marcum on the mound Sunday against
the Marlins

I
heard an interesting story at the Savannah Sand Gnats Media Day yesterday… RHH
C Albert Cordero wasn’t happy with his .194
batting average for the Sand Gants last year. So, came to spring training this
year… as a lefty. Yes, that’s right, he taught himself to hit lefty in the
off-season and, what I’m hearing, he’s not going to be a switch hitter either.
Just a lefty. Crazy stuff.

The Marcum news makes me think wheeler gets no more than four starts in Vegas.
I asked...
There is no way the Mets are going to bring up Wheeler in April. They just aren't going to do it.
They're not going to wait till mid June. Might as well call him up as soon as he is clear of reducing his team control years.
What were your thoughts on Jose Fernandez getting plugged into the Marlins rotation?
I know it probably wasn't the smart move, but I couldn't help bit be a bit ticked that the marlins can bring their prospects up to start the season and the Mets can't.
Bringing up Fernandez probably is way too early. He came out of nowhere last year.
However, the Marlins need to bring up every Latin American player in their organization to help attract more than 100 people going to their home games
Justin:
You're not adhering to the plan.
You can't rush 2014.
Let Wheeler and d'Arnaud work out their routine in Vegas for 4-6 starts... then bring them up together and make them a battery.
Replace them both on the Vegas team with Montero and Centeno.
Replace Centeno and Montero with Syndergaard and Aderlin...
Replace Montero and A-Rod with... well, you get the picture...
progress
Hopefully by the end of the year...
Wheeler and D'Anaurd are in MLB
Montero, Mazzoni, and Centeno are in Vegas
DeGrom, Syndergaard, and Mateo are in Bingo
Nimmo, Evans, and Matz are in Lucy
I'm guessing Fulmer will stay in Lucy all year due to his injury.
I also think they'll hold Flores in AAA until September call ups unless Murphy gets hurt.
I agree with Mack, 2013 means nothing for the Mets. Sure, they might surprise with their bad news bears outfield, but it really is a system wide development year. All working towards 2014.
Mack, Aderlin is listed on the St. Lucie roster. Are you saying you are hearing his wrist is hurt to the point he'll be on the DL?
If Wheeler's promotion moves Montero to Vegas and Syndergaard to Bingo as early as May, I hope Syndergaard get 4-6 starts in AAA to finish out the year just like Wheeler did last year. Wheeler was drafted in 2009 and Syndergaard in 2010, only a year apart. Given that reports are saying that Syndergaard is ahead of where Wheeler was developmentally at the same time, it's reasonable to think Noah can be ready for the bigs sometime in 2014. I'd love to have him follow the Wheeler track and be in NYC in May 2014.
Justin - Why be ticked? It's only a few weeks. We can be patient.
Daniel:
A-Rod's write IS hurt.
I just don't know yet if it is hurt enough to keep him out of the lineup.
My calls haven't been returned.
We'll have to wait until tomorrow
Mack
Justin:
The battle of Gettysburg is NEXT season.
We're just positioning troops in 2013.
Mack thanks for the response
Daniel:
I heard from one of my 'peeps' in Lucy...
ARod is fine and opens at 3B tomorrow...
He also will play some 1B this year
