Organizational Update – Outfield

 First, the good news.

Brandon Nimmo (A - .442) is hitting the snot off the ball. He’s proving every day that the Sally League may have no one that can master this guy. Age is as much of a factor here as it was with Bryce Harper. Talent is talent and Nimmo has it. Long range this changes everything. He obviously will finish this season in St. Lucie (Binghamton an option but I don’t see it). This means he would start the 2014 season with Binghamton, finish it in Las Vegas and be ready for opening day 2015.

I’m not sure if he projects into the CF slot. LF looks like it will be Lucas Duda’s home for at least the 2013-2015 period, but there always the chance he could revert back to 1B if Ike Davis doesn’t pan out.
The Mets have no other outfielders under contract past the 2013 season; in fact, they only have David Wright and Jon Niese signed past this season. No outfielder in the organization looks to be extended in the near future.

The loss of both Justin Upton and Michael Bourn in the free agency market has set back this team for, at least, another year. Marlon Byrd was a nice signing, Collin Cowgill is a pleasant surprise, and Jordany Valdespin has offered some depth, but none project out as a long term solution.

Organizationally, there are no projected star prospects in the 2013/2014 window. Kirk Niewenhius, Matt den Dekker, Cory Vaughn, Cesar Puello, Darrell Cecilliani, Alonzo Harris, and Juan Lagares all have holes in their game and show signs of hitting the talent wall.

Past that, Gilbert Gomez (A+), Eudy Pena (A), Vincente Lupo (extended) and Wuilmer Becerra (DSL) offer hope, but it’s too early to project.

Projection:  The Mets have no choice but to trade one of their young starters for a prime outfielder. Rafael Montero or Noah Syndergaard may not be enough to obtain what is needed here. They have to consider Zack Wheeler as an option before his Las Vegas ERA grows any higher.

They'll only trade Zach for Stanton. I also think they'll only trade for a young and controlled player. I think Montero and Synder are also safe. It's Fulmer, Tapia, DeGrom, Mateo and Mazzoni that I think they'll look to move first.

Ultimately, chances are they'll have to give up one of their best for an impact bat. So, even though I think Synder is safe for now, I think by next spring he'll be in another organization.

I wouldn't worry about Zack's ERA in Vegas tarnishing his image or lowering his trade value. Anyone who knows anything (and I suspect all major league GM and their talent people fall in that category) realize that pitching in the PCL warrants hazardous duty pay. That said, I am still hoping that Alderson is a shrewd enough trader to hold onto Wheeler and d'Arnaud, even in a Giancarlo deal. I can't help but believe that a package that included Duda, Syndergaard, Flores, and 2 or 3 other good prospects, (say Luis Cessa, Matt Bowman, Jayce Boyd, Cam Maron, etc?) could get a Stanton.

are you doing a 6am posting tomorrow morning?

It would be wonderful if the Marlins would accept a package of Syndergaard and Flores for Stanton, but if so then I believe that you can be sure the secondary prospects would be on the order of Tapia, pre-injury Mateo and Rosario, not the guys you mentioned. Those guys have negligible if any trade value, especially if the target is Stanton.

Caveat: The Mets did MUCH better than i expected for Dickey. I was expecting something like Gose and a pitcher.

The Marlins are going to realize that they're better off getting multiple quality players back than just a star or two. They have a star in Stanton and they're terrible.

I'd go after a 3B prospect (Olt?), a 2B prospect (Wong?), OF prospect (whomever for Buck) and send those 3 plus Montero and Plawecki. They could be looking at:

1. SS Adeiny Hechavarria
2. 2B Kolten Wong
3. OF Cristian Yelich
4. 3B Michael Olt
5. 1B Logan Morrison
6. OF Jake Marisnick
7. OF
8. Ca Kevin Plawecki

SP1 Jose Fernandez
SP2 Jacob Turner
SP3 Justin Nicolino
SP4 Rafael Montero
SP5 Andrew Heaney

Perhaps the Mets can go to war with a rotation of Harvey, Niese, Wheeler, Montero and Gee. Those 5 should be able to keep the Mets in the game for 7 innings. Add Parnell, Familia, Mejia, Leathersich, Mazzoni, DeGrom and Edgin in the pen. You might see a lot of low score games.

Jonah, I have no idea what the status of Mejia is. I hear nothing about him

Mack Ade said...

Michel, I'm confused.

Who did we get for Plawecki and Montero?

Mack, I assume Mejia will be back. Dont know when but next year should be the goal. Any time sooner is a bonus to me.
