John From Albany – Mets News and Breakfast Links 11/15/2020

Good Morning.  Happy Birthday Randy Niemann. The Dominican Winter League gets underway today, Amed Rosario works on his swing and does Sandy think Catcher is the bigger priority over CF?

Section Links: Mets Links, MLB Links, Winter Baseball, Asian Baseball, and This Day in Mets History.

Mets Links:

Empire Sports Media: Amed Rosario is working with the man that revamped Justin Turner’s swing.

NY Post: Mets targeting Masahiro Tanaka in free agency can’t be ruled out. “Though Tanaka had an unusually tough postseason, he was solid again during the abbreviated regular season and could slide into the middle of the Mets’ rotation.”

NY Post: Yankees could be forced into Mets risk with Gary Sanchez. George A. King thinks the Mets could end up signing Gary Sanchez as a free agent with the Mets if he is non-tendered by the Yankees and the Mets don’t sign J.T. Realmuto.

Bill Madden NY Daily News talks about the Mets and Yankees both needing a catcher and asking if they will spend for it. “And despite recurring reports that Cohen would like to sign fellow Connecticut resident George Springer, sources have told me that Sandy Alderson doesn’t view center field as nearly the priority as catcher…Besides the revenue-challenged industry, there are concerns about Realmuto’s age (30 next March) and the hip issue that surfaced last year. James McCann, who is also 30, will likely come a lot cheaper and is probably a better bet coming off two solid seasons with the White Sox.”

Metsmerized Online: Can Tomas Nido Maintain His Stellar Offensive Results In 2021? “Over his 26 plate appearances, the right-hander produced the best ISO (.292), BABIP (.313), OBP (.346), SLG (.583), OPS (.929), wOBA (.383), walk rate (7.7%), barrel rate (11.1%), wRC+ (150), and fWAR rating (0.3) of his entire career...one double, two home runs, six RBIs, .292 AVG.”

Mike’s Mets looks at what losing Minor League Teams means for many in “The Ponies Rumble Onward.”

Charlie Hangley Mets360: The Steve Cohen/Sandy Alderson era of good feeling. “Obviously, right now, this is all theoretical. With a brand new regime, there is always a honeymoon period until the action starts. We still don’t know who Cohen/Alderson will hire as GM yet, for example.”

UK Mets Blog: All In From Day One...Writer Andrew Beasley looks at how another one of his favorite teams, Liverpool, was turned around with new ownership and says: “But I can’t help but wonder if Cohen has set himself up to fail somewhat with his bold words [win a World Series in the next three to five years], and you can bet rival fans have bookmarked the quote for the first bad run which the Mets will inevitably have in 2021.”

Rising Apple: Mets could make Trevor Bauer one of their greatest free agent signings. “To do this, Bauer doesn’t need to accomplish a whole lot. The 2020 NL Cy Young winner merely needs to pitch near his career averages.”

Rising Apple: Where does Franklyn Kilome fit into the 2021 plans?  “Kilome’s past minor league numbers are far better than what he did with the big league team in 2020. For instance, in 2017 while with the Philadelphia Phillies’ farm system, Franklyn Kilome went 7-7 with a 2.83 ERA in 24 starts.”

Franchise Sports: Jose Quintana: Potential landing spots in free agency. “The New York Mets are destined to be linked with every free agent. Quintana is a solid option for the Mets, who are on the lookout for pitching depth behind Jacob deGrom and Marcus Stroman.”

ICYMI Yesterday At Mack’s Mets:

Reese Kaplan -- We Need Firemen Spraying Water, Not Kerosene.

Tom Brennan - Yes, Facebook "Fan", Marcus Stroman's signing is in fact a good thing.

MLB.com: Too soon? Predicting the '21 division winners. NL: Braves, Cardinals, Dodgers.  AL: Blue Jays, White Sox and the Mariners featuring Jarred Kelenic. About the NL East they do ass this: “If the Mets do go nuts, there will be particular reason to pick them. They’ve got the best pitcher in baseball in Jacob deGrom, and they have a lineup that, according to context stats like weighted runs created plus and OPS+, was comparable to that of the Dodgers in 2020.”

MLB Trade Rumors: MLB Planning For Fan Attendance In 2021.

Mike Lupica NY Daily News: In hiring Kim Ng, Derek Jeter continues to prove he has the vision to make the Marlins great.

Joel Sherman NY Post: Don Mattingly, Dusty Baker deserve second Hall of Fame look. Joel argues that the entire “Baseball Life” of Dusty Baker, Don Mattingly as well as Gil Hodges should put them into the Hall.

Mike Vaccaro NY Post: Baseball cards always will hold transcendent place in game’s history. “But baseball cards, vintage ones, also provide a remarkable service to the game because they offer slices of actual history you can hold in your hand (usually with a plastic case serving as a buffer).”

NY Post: Bidding at Johnny Bench auction ends at just under $2M.

Rum Bunter: Examining the 2020 Season of Phillip Evans. “…after a collision with right fielder Gregory Polanco…the Pirates’ utility man was placed on the 45-day injured list with a concussion and was forced to undergo jaw surgery, ultimately ending his 2020 season...During his 11 games, Evans was off to a very hot start…slashing .359/.444/.487 with a home run and nine RBI through his first 45 plate appearances.”

A silly article: Tomas Nido “Stellar Offensive Results,” based on 26 plate appearances. So Statistically insignificant. That’s a week worth of games started. Why not add in his 3 for 18 spring training? Then, not so stellar.

The Mets need to trade and spend their way right past the Braves in 2021. Big market, unleveraged teams get to do stuff like that.

I like Nido a lot and, if the Mets get rid of him, he will be the next Travis d"Arnaud. Of course, if they keep him, he may turn out to be the next Harry Chiti. I am pulling for him and hope he is the catching mix somehow.
