Mets Links:

As we had yesterday on Mack’s Mets Sandy Alderson held a Press Conference.

Highlights included:

Mets.com: Mets pivot, will now seek new GM. Alderson will control baseball operations in short term.

NY Post.com: “Front office stars such as Milwaukee’s David Stearns, Cleveland’s Chris Antonetti and Tampa Bay’s Erik Neander were on Alderson’s radar, according to sources, but receiving permission to interview them — all of whom are under contract and would have been moving laterally — proved problematic. Alderson said he didn’t reach out to Theo Epstein…”

Mets, com: Alderson confirms Rojas will return in 2021. “I’m thrilled to be the manager under the leadership of Sandy and to try to win a World Series,” Rojas said in a text. “We look forward to putting in the work and making our fans proud.”

Mike Puma NY Post: “Alderson…said none of the roughly six GM candidates he’s interviewed were against the idea of Rojas returning for a second season”.

Larry Brown Sports: Sandy Alderson wants NL to immediately adopt universal DH.

The Score: Mets have no immediate plans to release suspended Cano.

Mike Vaccaro NY Post: Mets surprise gives Sandy Alderson chance to rewrite legacy. “He wasn’t a perfect GM, and while it is easy to blame the bulk of those poor decisions on the fiscal handcuffs of the Wilpon regime, not all of went wrong went wrong because of that. But he did get an awful lot right. Now he gets a chance to leave behind one final parting gift before handing over the reins to the Mets’ future architect, whoever that may be.”

Mark Berman The Blogging Mets: Steve Cohen Makes 2nd Mistake as Mets Owner. “The first, arguably, was bringing back Sandy Alderson. Now he is compounding it by allowing Alderson to run the baseball side of things. We know how that turned out last time… Remember when he was supposed to find the hidden value in players, and all he could provide was the likes of Shaun Marcum and John Mayberry, Jr.?”

Newsday: "I don’t think we’re a player away,’’ Alderson told reporters on a Zoom call late Monday afternoon. "I think we’d need more than that. Do we have a good foundation? Yes, I think we have an excellent foundation. But I think that our needs are multiple at this point and that we’re more than a player away.’’

NJ.com: Did Sandy Alderson drop hint Mets will pass on DJ LeMahieu? “’We have a number of holes to fill,’ Alderson said. ‘We’ve talked about starting pitching. We’ve talked about the outfield. We’ve talked about catching. We’d like to enhance the bullpen somewhat. So we’ve got a lot of places where we might invest, and this definitely gives us a little more flexibility.’… These comments certainly don’t mean that the Mets won’t pursue LeMahieu, but they could be a hint that their first priorities will be filling other needs.”

MLB.com: LeMahieu to Mets could have domino effect. “Francisco Lindor to the Bronx becomes more likely; First DJ, then Bauer?; Blue Jays turn focus to center field; It might be Dodgers or bust for Arenado’s trade chances.”

Radio.com/WFAN: Keidel: 3 offseason moves that could put Mets ahead of Yankees as New York's top team. 1. Sign Trevor Bauer. 2. Trade for Josh Hader – “the Mets can't trust Edwin Diaz..the Mets' bullpen ranked 18th in MLB with a 4.60 ERA and seven blown saves in 18 chances.” 3. “find a way to get Bauer, LeMahieu and George Springer, and let Yankees, long sick of Gary Sanchez, overpay for Realmuto.”

Metsmerized Online: George Springer Makes Perfect Sense For Mets. “Springer, 31, is everything the Mets currently need with him being a center fielder and right-handed bat in a very left-handed lineup.”

Metsmerized Online: Josh Hejka, Mets Minor League Sidearm Extraordinaire.

Metsmerized Online: Book Review: Tom Seaver “A Terrific Life”.

Amazing Avenue: Finding starting pitching for the Mets, Part 3. Anibal Sanchez, Cole Hamels, and Brett Anderson are considered.

The Mets' former closer John Franco signs a three-year pact as a set-up man to stay with his hometown team, foregoing an opportunity to close for the Phillies. The Marlins cut their payroll when the team sends last season's premiere free agent Carlos Delgado (.301, 33, 115) and $7 million to the Mets for Mike Jacobs (10 homers in 100 at-bats), minor league infielder Grant Psomas and Yusmeiro Petit, a highly touted pitching prospect. In January, the free-agent first baseman left Toronto after 12 years of service to sign a four-year deal worth a reported $52 million to play for Florida.

The Mets remarkably still have minor league outfield weakness despite collapsing 6 teams to 4, so if Tebow gives it one last try, maybe his positives will outweigh the negatives.

On a more pertinent note, welcome back Luis Rojas. May you have a 100 win team to manage.

Hader in a trade? That would be exciting, but as always, what would we give up? Brew Crew would want a top prospect, I'd imagine, maybe two.

Picking on Sandy already? I am not going to knee jerk judge Sandy based on his past decisions when he tried to do the impossible with the former owners. Let's see what he can do with real money. Lots of it.

Hader has been on the market for two years as Stearns is trying to convince the next Brodie to fall in love with a dream. The Mets need to keep their players and prospects, and just sign the correct two or three guys.

I am thinking of using the new Cano money in tandem with available money to take Jason Hayward off the Cubs hands for CF, and having them add Contreras and Bryant for minimal return. That solves the fielders and they can still sign two starting pitchers.

Just one idea.
