Marcelo Mayer - Eastlake HS (CA) - WWBA was a loud ending to Mayer's year. Got unlucky with hits, but showcased well with loud contact, power to all fields. Glove is good as well, very fluid motions at short.

First real surprise off the board here with Arizona taking the California prep Marcelo Mayer, but once you dig you’ll understand why. One of the more visually appealing left handed swings you’re going to find anywhere in this class. Very short to the ball with elite barrel control. 60 grade hit tool with possible plus raw power to come as he starts to fill out his frame. Plus glove at either shortstop or third base right now, but the hot corner will be his long term home as he matures. Potential sleeping giant star-power with this kid.

6-foot-3, 185 pounds. Wiry frame with plenty of projection to come; 15-20 pounds of good weight by the time he makes his major league debut. Smooth-swinging left-handed hitter with an elevated bat path aimed to hit the ball in the air. Potential 25+ home run bat with an average hit tool. Could end up being an elite defender at shortstop with enough arm strength to stick there moving forward.
If there’s one guy in the 2021 class that may be a dark-horse to go first overall, I think Hill is the guy. There’s an immense package here to dream on if he can put it all together in February. The body, the physicality, the mechanics and operation, the arsenal, the present and projectable velocity, it’s all there. He’s not a complete pitcher yet, and some of Hill’s value certainly rests in his continued arm talent development, but Hill is a fine Geaux-Bordeaux — expect him to get better with time.
As mentioned above, the 2021 class is highlighted by several up-the-middle prep prospects, and there isn’t a more polarizing talent than Eastlake High School shortstop Marcelo Mayer.

As mentioned above, the 2021 class is highlighted by several up-the-middle prep prospects, and there isn’t a more polarizing talent than Eastlake High School shortstop Marcelo Mayer.
For a 6-foot-3 high schooler out of Chula Vista, Calif., Mayer has a mature approach at the plate. He waits for his pitch and slaps line drives to the gaps with a smooth left-handed swing that is well balanced throughout his load. Defensively, Mayer has the instincts and physical makeup to stick at shortstop long term. He makes crisp glove-to-hand transfers and flashes the leather with diving grabs that look to be out of reach.
Ability to hit for power dinged Mayer’s early draft outlook, but he showcased an effective pull-heavy approach during the WWBA World Championships this month. If he continues to tap into raw power as his body matures and develops, Mayer can be a complete package that plays well on the dirt.
Teams don’t draft for need in the MLB Draft, but if there is one thing that the D-backs’ farm system lacks, it’s depth and offensive prowess at shortstop and third base. Mayer has put more power on display for scouts to see, and he could be an enticing option for Arizona to take with the sixth pick.

Mayer didn’t have an overwhelming stat line from the WWBA World Championship, but was wholly fine and held his stock steadily high. He showed the same high-level left-handed swing that projects both in terms of hit and power tools, and continued to show solid defensive skills and overall athleticism in the middle infield.
Marcelo Mayer – SS: All-around strong athlete with one of the better approaches at the plate to go with an Above-Average (55) Hit Tool. Showing a smooth, consistent swing from the left side. However, the bat path is rather flat but has been showing more loft as of late and projects for League-Average (50) Power at his peak, with the potential for more as he tinkers with his bat path as he enters pro ball to tap into that power more consistently. As good as he is in the box, he shows equally as strong defensively at a premium position as a 55 Defender with a (60) Arm that’s capable of making most any throw on the infield.

A lot of action for Marcelo Mayer at SS in the first. One error clanked off his glove on a fairly routine backhand, but he also made a slick diving stop up the middle and a routine play on a slow-roller on a broken bat ground ball. He glides around the field.

Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake HS (Calif.) – No. 3 on the Top 15, Mayer is the 1A to Lawlar among high school shortstops. He has as good an approach at the plate as any high schooler in the class with elite bat-to-ball skills. He can really play shortstop, with instincts and aptitude better than raw tools, kind of like Brandon Crawford.

Finally got to see Marcelo Mayer this morning. While he did strike out twice, he sent this ball to deep LCF gap where it was tracked down by the CF. Very loud off the bat, strong and smooth stroke. Very smooth in the field as well at SS

In a draft class littered with talented high school shortstops, Mayer’s physical frame and well-rounded game help him stand out. Offensively, he has a clean, pretty swing that generates easy bat speed. He has explosive hands that help him generate that bat speed without having elite hip/torso separation. His ability to rotate and pull balls with authority gives him intriguing in-game power potential, especially when considering he could still develop into more of a physical specimen given how much weight his frame can still add. Mayer also has good bat to ball skills and commands the strike zone well enough to have an above average hit tool. A potential Mayer slash line may look like .265/.360/.440 with 15 bombs. Much of Mayer’s value also stems from his defense at shortstop. He is a lock to stick at the position with good lateral quickness and baseball instincts that give him good range. His actions and arm strength/accuracy/utility are above average as well. The knock on Mayer right now is that he has been absent from a lot of the high-profile showcase events, and as a result he hasn’t been seen too much against the best high school talent around. That will chance soon, as Mayer will be participating in the Perfect Game All-American Game in Oklahoma City next month. In sum, Mayer has 5-tool potential, and his athleticism and the amount of physical projection left make him a candidate for a top-10 selection. Mayer is committed to USC.

Marcelo Mayer - Mayer had been under the radar prior to this week, so it was interesting to finally get some eyes on a guy who has been one of the bigger names in the class for a few years. He had a good night with a firm base hit up the middle and some impressive actions on the dirt. The immediate thing that stands out about Mayer is the ease in which he goes about his business; his operation offensively is ridiculously smooth, and is sure to garner some Robinson Cano comps in the lead up to the draft. Mayer displays a rhythmic set up with a smooth, controlled load. He doesn’t create huge separation at foot strike, as his hips don’t aggressively initiate rotation in the same way that some of the elite hitters do. This will likely limit his ability to produce upper echelon exit velocities for the time being, however he has a ton of physical projection remaining so he might see an improvement in this area as his body continues to mature.
Mayer has a pretty steep swing path which bodes well for projecting out his hit tool, and shows feel for hitting with flexion in his lead arm - a good sign pertaining to the adjustability present in his swing. He’s a no doubt shortstop, with the arm and actions to profile at the position. How Mayer’s body trends coupled with hopefully creating more torque in the future will be what determines his future outcome as a prospect.
