John From Albany – Mets News and Breakfast Links 11/29/2020

Good Morning.  Happy Birthday Rick Anderson and Howard Johnson. Mets have a lot of "Irons in the Fire", Phil Regan comes home and the Phillies lost money in 2020.

Section Links: Mets Links, MLB Links, Winter Baseball, and This Day in Mets History.

Mets Links:

Bill Madden had lots of takeaways from this weekend’s article in the Daily News such as: “clubs are waiting until Dec. 2 [non-tender deadline] to start assessing their needs... Phillies managing partner John Middleton told his baseball people that because of the massive losses the club suffered last year they may not be in position to re-sign Realmuto or any other big-ticket free agents…Word is Rob Manfred is pushing hard for the Mets to hire Chris Young.”

ESPN.com: Philadelphia Phillies lost $145M during 2020 season, report says.

Mets Daddy: Phillies Not Attempting To Re-Sign J.T. Realmuto Is Ludicrous.

MLB.com: The free-agent hitters with the best tools. This includes Best arm: J.T. Realmuto - Key stat: 1.89 second average pop time to 2B in 2019.

NY Post: Mets, Steve Cohen biding their time: ‘Lots of irons in the fire’.

MLB Trade Rumors: According to Sportsnet.ca’s Shi Davidi, the Jays have “progressed beyond just talking” with Springer, which would seem to indicate that Toronto has issued at least one offer to the former World Series MVP.

Metsmerized Online: Mets’ Alternative CF Options As Jays Woo George Springer. Kevin KiermaierJackie Bradley Jr. and Nick Senzel are considered.

MetsJunkies: What it would take to get Bauer… and Snell. For Bauer, Writer Gem Tablak suggests the Mets would have to outbid the projected Dodgers’ offer for “a four year deal worth $128M”…Two Blake Snell Trade proposals include Andres Gimenez and Brandon Nimmo or Matthew Allan, Brett Baty, J.D. Davis, and Thomas Szapucki.

Amazing Avenue: International Free Agent Profile: RHP Tomoyuki Sugano. Arguably the best pitcher in Japan, Tomo Sugano may be coming to the United States in 2021.

Metsmerized Online: Mets Should Target Tomoyuki Sugano Next Month.

Rising Apple: New York Mets must avoid overpaying for Masahiro Tanaka.

A couple of Posts looking at Pete Alonso’s 2020 year:

Rising Apple: “The infamous sophomore slump seemed to bite Alonso hard in 2020. His batting average dropped 29 points, his OBP was down 32 points, and his slugging percentage took the biggest hit from .583 down to .490.”

Rob Rogan Mets360 noted: “He appeared to miss more on pitches outside of the strike zone in 2020, though he didn’t swing at them much more often. Pitchers also appeared to bust him inside with cutters more often in 2020, a pitch he had less success with than in his 2019 breakout. These all appear to be signs of a player making adjustments to adjustments, though, and none of them signal that Alonso was overmatched during his second tour through the league”.

Rising Apple: Expect Marcus Stroman to make you forget about a lost 2020.  Besides the fact that he will be playing for a long term deal after 2021 they note: “If Marcus Stroman can cut down on his walks, which many attributed to nerves in his first season in Queens, he will have the potential to have the breakout season fans were expecting to see in 2020”.

Rising Apple: How the Mets can become the Gold Standard of Major League Baseball. Aim to win every year; Reward players with extensions; Develop and nurture minor league talent.

ICYMI: Yesterday at Mack’s Mets:

Reese Kaplan -- Be Thankful, Be Wary, Be Excited.

Tom Brennan – From tender turkeys to non-tender turkeys.

Mack - Scouting Report - LHP - Drew Gray.

Mack - Scouting Report - LHP - Mason Albright.

MLB Trade Rumors: 2020 Non-Tender Candidates.

MLB.com has 12 Free Agent reunions they’d like to see. This includes James McCann and Rick Porcello and the Tigers.

MLB Trade Rumors: KBO’s Hanwha Eagles Sign Ryan Carpenter, Nick Kingham.

MLB.com: The most memorable recent 3-team deals. The J.J. Putz, Sean Green, Joe Smith trade from 2008 is included.  I agree with Joe Smith’s assessment “It was a mess.”

Boston Herald: Blake Snell on the trade block is more proof the Rays are bad for baseball.

AZCentral: Ex-Angels General Manager Tony Reagins, who is Black, should be running a baseball team. “Reagins ran the Los Angeles Angels from 2008-11, a four-season span in which the club averaged 90 wins per season, made the playoffs twice and posted the only 100-win season in franchise history.”

Detroit Free Press: Bob Miller, ex-Detroit Tigers pitcher, longtime Detroit Mercy baseball coach, dies at 94.

CBS Sports: Rare Honus Wagner video footage shows Pirates legend discussing state of baseball in 1933.  “Wagner declares that contemporary pitchers relative to pitchers in his day had "harder work." That's certainly true. The thirties were very much a hitters' era, whereas Wagner toiled in the Deadball Era.”

Winter Baseball:

MLB.com: Nationals center fielder Victor Robles sustained a sprained right ankle while playing for Águilas Cibaeñas in the Dominican Republic. He has not played in the last three games and is listed as day to day, the team announced on Saturday.

In the Mexican Pacific League:

Naranjeros de Hermosillo 4 Los Caneros de los Mochis 0 (Box Score).  Juan Uriarte did not play, .236 Avg. this winter. Former Met Fernando Salas got his 8th save of the winter for Narajeros.

Qilvio Bears for Carl Everett? What a steal!

Phillies just laid off 80 people, that owner isn’t signing anyone. One less suitor for Realmuto.

On Regan’s work with Matz, the one thing that impressed me was how Matz’ landing was imbalanced due to him throwing harder - 97mph. Whoever thinks Alderson is going to let a lefty arm like that go with a non-tender is nuts. When Brad Hand is expecting at least $7MM, you don’t think Matz can do that job for $5.5? In fact, Matz may excel in the bullpen where he can just catch and throw, no pacing himself. Still, I’d like to see that talent in the rotation.

Gus - I was upset about the Carl Everett trade at the time as I loved seeing Veras play for Binghamton. I was surprised he never made it.

Then, after the 1997 season, Everett was traded to the Houston Astros for John Hudek - in one of the Mets many attempts to get bull pen help.

Now that Regan is back in Florida, he can continue to work with Matz. I agree, tender Matz. He is still a valuable commodity. He may even have options left which would allow him to get his act together in Syracuse.

I believe Carl Everett was accused of beating his kid. Not sure it was ever proved, but he was guilty until proven innocent in the court of Wilpon.

They'd have to be convinced that Matz can be fixed. HR-prone relievers are recipes for Pepto Bismol.

Anyone interested in one of those Snell trades?

John From Albany said...

Not me. If the Rays want salary relief - fine but no top prospects in the deal.

I would be interested in Snell if they were willing to take one of our young first basemen for him. That would help the imbalance of the roster. If they want to empty out our minors, they can prey on other teams - and there will be plenty. Washington, maybe Philly, Seattle wants cheap pitching, San Francisco, White Sox, Angels, Milwaukee, and every team in the AL East. And these are the teams off the top my head!

I went to a game that Everett hit a grand slam in the eighth or ninth inning, to cap a six run rally and tie the game. Off the right field foul pole, sitting at first base side mezzanine, it was easy to track it. Shea went nuts.

Unknown said...

I was at that game also. I believe it was 9/13/97. Ninth inning grand slam to tie a game that the Mets had been held to one hit for the first eight innings.

That was a great game. I think Corey Lidle pitched great in relief to keep the game close. One of the all-time great Mets comeback wins.
