Scouting Report - 3B - Tommy White

Tommy White

3B 6-2 220 IMG Academy (FL)

 PG -

Tommy White is a 2021 3B/1B with a 6-2 220 lb. frame from St. Pete Beach, FL who attends IMG Academy. Big and strong build, seems firmer and more athletic since last seen. Right handed hitter, has outstanding rhythm at the plate in his swing, quick and explosive hands, ball comes off the barrel hard and often, line drive swing plane at present but flashes big lift and power at times. Highest level hitter with some projection remaining as he further learns his swing and how to adjust to different pitches. 7.36 runner, is light on his feet for his size and moves well to the ball, soft hands, has playable arm strength and can drop his slot with good effect and make athletic plays. One of the best bats in the 2021 class.

Tommy White, 3B, IMG Academy

Tommy White looks like he hits dingers. If that doesn’t immediately make sense, it probably will when you take a look at him in the box. A rotund 6’2”, 240 lbs., it goes without saying that there’s not much projection left in White’s body, but that isn’t an issue when you have now power like his. White’s raw power is big, but on top of that he takes absolutely massive cuts.

The immediate reaction of many is concern around the hit tool, and while that’s fair, White does show some really impressive feel for the barrel. It’s probably true that he’ll strike out at an above average clip, but if there’s one thing you can be confident in with White it’s that the quality of contact should be about as good as it gets.

The idea of White playing third base long term is probably a pipe dream unless his body changes, but you’re drafting this kid for his bat, and if he hits like his biggest supporters expect, it’ll play at DH. His power rates in plus-plus territory, and almost all of it projects as usable pop. With the ability to mishit balls for extra bases and drive pitches into the seats the other way, White has all the makings of a potential cleanup slugger if he’s able to keep things in enough control to make contact. He’s almost like an incredibly large Keston Hiura in the way he approaches hitting, and I like his odds.

 Prospect Worldwide -

Tommy White – 3B/1B: Very loose and fun attitude, Tommy is going to be a fan favorite wherever he ends up. A 3B by trade but very likely may see his future at 1B. But is fairly athletic, and decent enough with the glove (45) Defender, to give him a chance to stick at 3B with some improvements. One of the most consistent Hit tools (55) and approaches paired with a patient, Pro style approach that helps him drive the ball to all fields. A knack for finding barrels on balls all over the strike zone. He has some good pop as well with Above-Average (55) Power. Not a ton of speed, but again does show some athleticism on the field. An exciting bat that is a fit in the middle of any lineup.

Tommy White - One of the many IMG Academy kids who attended the All-American Classic, White has carried a loud bat with him throughout the summer circuit. He’s vaulted himself into potential Day 1 consideration by showcasing big time power to all fields and a great feel for the barrel. To no one’s surprise, he made it the Home Run Derby final, where he hit 12 home runs, tying Joshua Baez and ultimately losing out to Benny Montgomery. In the first inning, he got to face Christian Little, but White struck out after swinging through three straight fastballs. He did manage to draw two walks to finish his day against Ryan Ginther and Jackson Jobe respectively. In the field, White has a strong arm from the hot corner and moves well for a kid at his size. The North Carolina State commit is going to be one to watch during the fall with the Florida Burn and in the spring.
