Mike Puma NY Post: Mets’ president candidate Michael Hill led Marlins back to prominence. “Hill, a Harvard graduate, played in the Rangers and Reds minor league systems before joining the Rays as a scouting assistant in the 1990s… said a former colleague of Hill’s. ‘He played professionally, he’s been through player development and scouting and stuff like that when he started. He kind of had to learn his way up, which I think is a lot different than some of the other guys that come in just with the numbers and that’s what they know. Mike has been in the dugout. He’s been in the locker room.’”

Fangraphs: Marcus Stroman Choses the Mets and their Infield. They note how they improved in 2020 over 2019: The biggest difference was in the performance of their shortstops. Amed Rosario improved from -8 OAA in 2019 to +2 in 2020, and the newcomer Andres Gimenez provided elite defense (+5 OAA) in his limited innings at short. The team’s defense at second base also improved with Robinson Cano going from -2 OAA to +2 and Luis Guillorme adding +2 in limited innings as well.

The Mets stage a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the construction of the 45,000-seat ballpark, which will replace Shea Stadium in 2009. The new $800 million ballpark, named Citi Field in association with Citigroup Inc., will be reminiscent of Ebbets Field and will feature a statue of Jackie Robinson in a rotunda named after the immortal Brooklyn Dodger infielder.

The Phillies announce the team has reached a two-year, $16 million deal with Marlon Byrd, who helped the Pirates reach the postseason for the first since 1992 by hitting .318 after being traded by the Mets to the Bucs at the end of August. Last offseason, the 36 year-old outfielder signed a minor league contract with New York, emerging as one of the team's few offensive assets before being dealt to Pittsburgh along with John Buck for two minor league prospects.
