John From Albany – Mets News and Breakfast Links 11/13/2020

Good Morning. Born Today Mel Stottlemyre.  Happy Birthday George Theodore and Asdrubal Cabrera, Brian Metoyer, and Brett Baty.  Noah Syndergaard throws from a mound, and how will Sandy do?

Section Links: Mets Links, MLB Links, Asian Baseball, and This Day in Mets History.

Mets Links:

Joel Sherman NY Post: Sandy Alderson has financial freedom but now comes hard part. “…much of the near future will evolve around Alderson and whomever he hires to run baseball operations picking players — namely free agents — better than the past two Mets GM, one of whom was Alderson.”

SNY.TV: Are we seeing a 'new' Sandy Alderson under Steve Cohen?

Metsmerized Online: Sandy Alderson’s Most Impactful Quote From Tuesday’s Presser. “It’s not about how much less we can get someone for, it’s about getting that somebody. We can now emphasize the acquisition, rather than the cost.”

Forbes.com: Under New Ownership, Sandy Alderson Can Pursue His Original Mets Plan. “in [the] Tuesday press conference…It was less regime change and more like watching Sandy Alderson run through town as Pottersville turned into Bedford Falls.”

Mike Puma NY Post: Mets’ president candidate Michael Hill led Marlins back to prominence. “Hill, a Harvard graduate, played in the Rangers and Reds minor league systems before joining the Rays as a scouting assistant in the 1990s… said a former colleague of Hill’s. ‘He played professionally, he’s been through player development and scouting and stuff like that when he started. He kind of had to learn his way up, which I think is a lot different than some of the other guys that come in just with the numbers and that’s what they know. Mike has been in the dugout. He’s been in the locker room.’”

Metsmerized Online: Rosenthal: Erik Neander “Almost Certainly” Not Leaving Rays.

You Tube Mets Channel: Steve Cohen is ALL IN

Fangraphs: Marcus Stroman Choses the Mets and their Infield. They note how they improved in 2020 over 2019: The biggest difference was in the performance of their shortstops. Amed Rosario improved from -8 OAA in 2019 to +2 in 2020, and the newcomer Andres Gimenez provided elite defense (+5 OAA) in his limited innings at short. The team’s defense at second base also improved with Robinson Cano going from -2 OAA to +2 and Luis Guillorme adding +2 in limited innings as well.

Rising Apple: Why the Mets are better off with Marcus Stroman than Trevor Bauer.  “In Marcus Stroman’s six seasons in the majors, he has had an ERA under 4.00 in 4 out of the 6 years. Trevor Bauer has pitched in nine seasons and has had an ERA under 4.00 in only 2 of the 9 years.”

NY Post: Mets’ Noah Syndergaard is throwing — and Steve Cohen is hyped.

NY Daily News: Mets' Dom Smith says he has 'high hopes' for Steve Cohen. “[Dominic Smith] told the Daily News over the phone he was encouraged by everything he’s heard from Cohen’s introductionary presser. ‘Having an owner come in like that and say some pretty demanding things, and have high hopes for the organization the way he does, is definitely just a great sign.’”

SNY.TV: Mets and Yankees among teams to express interest in free agent Yadier Molina.

SNY.TV: Analyzing the Mets' options at catcher if J.T. Realmuto is out of the equation. James McCann and Yadier Molina are among the possibilities. “The 30-year-old McCann was among the better pitch-framers in baseball in 2020…and has been an overall plus defender behind the plate the last two seasons… Offensively in 2020, McCann slashed .289/.360/.536 after slashing .273/.328/.460 in 2019… While Molina…taking a chance on a 38-year-old with declining skills on both sides of the ball is not something the Mets should be doing.”

Brian Joura Mets360: Choices and consequences of being a Mets fan against the DH.  “…the beauty of the game is that the players have to play on both sides. It’s not football where you have one squad playing offense and a different group playing defense. You want J.D. Davis’ bat in the lineup? Then live with his glove.”

Rising Apple: Grab your bat Dominic Smith, the DH is a “safe bet” to return in 2021.

The Sports Daily: Mike Phillips' Mets Player Review Series: Seth Lugo. 2020 Stats: 16 Games, 7 Starts, 36.2 Innings Pitched, 3-4 Won-Loss Record, 5.15 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 3 Saves, 2 Blown Saves, 47:10 K:BB Ratio, 0.3 WAR.

Rising Apple: Mets Rumors: Is Brad Hand the apple of the Mets eye?

Rising Apple: Top five moments of David Wright’s career.

App.com: Former Mets, Yankees pitcher Dwight Gooden sentenced for drugs: 'This has saved my life'. Dwight “Doc” Gooden…vowed before Superior Court Judge Vincent N. Falcetano he would continue with his drug rehabilitation... Falcetano, who placed Gooden on probation for a year for the June 2019 drug offense, told the former athlete that was the wish of all involved in his court case.

For the sake of comparison, that's higher than both 2019 NL MVP Cody Bellinger (1.035) and runner-up Christian Yelich (1.100) posted last season.”

MLB.com: How reliever with 3.92 ERA got an MVP vote. “Cubs reliever Ryan Tepera…finished with a 3.92 ERA over 20 2/3 innings. He walked 12 of the 89 batters he faced…Hall of Fame writer Rick Hummel, who has covered the Cardinals for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for nearly four decades, mistakenly selected the wrong player…’Well, I intended to vote for Trea Turner in that spot,’ Hummel said.”

Thor seems determined, and to be throwing from a rubber on November 12 seems to put him on track for being ready around opening day. I'd guess they will be cautious and hold him back until at least May 1 or Memorial Day.

But Thor is totally enthusiastic about being part of the Steve Cohen Mets. I wonder about his enthusiasm level in that regard if the Wilpnns were still here.

Another day closer to what ought to be several exciting off season signings and trade acquisitions.

Happy birthday to Brian Metoyer - he kind of reminds me of AKeel Morris. It will be interesting to see what he brings in the minors now that he has turned 24.

Thanks for the answers to my questions on the rule 5 draft. Do you think there is a mutual agreement from teams to not poach players from one another systems during the minor league portion? It seems to me that the rule as it applies to young players from the international market does not allow enough time for them to develop.

The Dominican Winter Baseball league starts this Sunday. Do you know of any present Met players on these teams?

John From Albany said...

Thanks Raw. We will have daily Dominican League updates everyday right here on the Breakfast Links. I have been highlighting different players as they announce their winter league teams. So far the biggest contingent is in Australia led by Francisco Alvarez. That league starts mid-December. I hope to put together the complete list of players and ex-players in the Dominican before Sunday. As I have said previously, Phil Regan is the pitching coach again for last year's Caribbean Champions - Los Toros del Este.

Ariel Jurado is one current Met off the top of my head that has signed up for the Dominican League. Juan Lagares, Antonio Bastardo, and Jordany Valdespin are some notable ex-Mets. As we saw last year, different Mets pitchers came down and trained with Phil Regan over the season. I would expect something similar to happen this year.

Mexian Winter league, shut down due to COVID, should be coming back as well next week. Juan Uriarte has been doing well so far.

As far as your other question regarding the Rule 5 draft, eligible players have been in the minors 5-6 years. If they have not made an impact to be promoted as high as AAA, I think teams are not excited about taking them. It would take a scout who sees something special.

If I were the Mets, and had a team short of outfielders in AA and AAA, I would look to who was available in the Minor League portion - but these players will most likely be free agents next winter so it seems the Mets and other teams don't feel the urgency.

John, how long is the Australian league supposed to run?

Ahh, Australia....summer heat about to start and no COVID. At a quick glance, the whole country had 17 positive tests yesterday. They should slide right thru their summer into the vaccine in 3-4 months.

Tom -

The Australian League goes from December 18 - January 24 - 6 weeks.

7 inning baseball games - all the time. Francisco ALvarez, Manny Rodriquez, and more will be on the Sydney Blue Sox. They even have a TV package available. Maybe I can get a bar up here in Albany to have viewing parties and see if Jimmy will come to see his 7 inning game test in action.

Thanks again for the updates, John. It will be great to see reports of actual play again starting this weekend.

Oh and also former Syracuse Mets players Ervin Santana and Arismendy Alcantara are in the Dominican League this winter - how could I forget those guys?

Great opportunity for a few months for Alvarez in Australia. Outstanding. They have a hard lockdown there on international travel into their country, so it is great he was able (with the Mets' help, of course) to circumvent that. I'm sure he had to quarantine and test negative before being allowed to actually begin to practice with the team and play there.

I really hope that MLB can extend the Rule 5 by a year for very young international signings. Becoming a free agent at 21 or 22 in unfair to players coming thru the draft in the states.
