 3-8-21 - Prospect Live - Week 3 -

MCCADE BROWN, RHP, INDIANA

7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 12 K

McCade Brown was always thought to have a good arm, but command and secondary polish held him off some watchlists. That changed during the summer of 2020. Over 22.1 innings in the Kernals Collegiate League, Brown seared through the competition to the tune of a 0.93 ERA, allowing five hits, striking out 50(!) hitters. He did allow 11 free passes along the way. The fastball was suddenly up to 97 and his curve had developed into a true plus offering.

That trend continued in Indiana’s season opener as Brown was again into the mid-90s, showcasing the power curveball. He worked in one changeup as well, though it was spiked into the dirt.

At 6-foot-6, 225-pounds, Brown is built like a big leaguer. He’s got a shorter arm action and a sound move to the plate he repeats well. Right now it’s primarily a two-pitch mix, but if the changeup comes on in conference play, Brown could find himself in first round conversations.

Mack’s spin -

Haven’t heard much about Brown until this write-up.

Current 2021 stat line as of 3-8 - 1-start, 1-0, 1.29, 7-IP, 12-K

3-7-21 - Jake Tillinghast (@JTillinghast27) Tweeted:

OF Malakhi Knight 21' (Marysville-Getchell HS, WA)

One of the best OF in the class.

Run Times:   Home to 1st: 4.12 sec, 4.18 sec

2nd to Home 7.23 sec (late jump, still scored easily)

Hit the ball hard multiple times. Tons of athleticism here.

Mack’s spin -

Boy, Knight would make a great round two pick for the Mets but he will be long gone in the later portion of round one.

Check those times… wow.

3-7-21 - Keanan Lamb  (@keananlamb)

Georgia Tech baseball SS Luke Waddell is not a top of the draft prospect, but he is going to be a productive member of a pro org that will be very happy to have him

3-8-21 - Jake Tillinghast  @JTillinghast27

SS Luke Waddell is a gamer. Nice approach at the plate, uses the entire field well. Top of the order, table setter profile.

Mack’s spin - Waddell only stands 5’9 which should translate as a future player without pop. He plays ++ defensive in a number of positions and has good speed both on the bases and with a glove on him hand.

A current top 150 prospect.

2021 current stat line through 3-7:  11-G, 49-AB, .367, 2-HR

3-7-21 - Tyler Jennings - @TylerJennings24

Boston College entered the 9th down 9-1. Sal Frelick led off with an opposite field single, and he now ties it at 9 with a 3-run bomb. What a comeback and what a swing from Frelick.

Mack’s spin -

People either love or hate this kid. I have him as a second baseman though many place him in the outfield. Either way, a solid first round pick.

Current 2021 stat line through 3-7 - 10-G, 42-AB, .476, 4-HR

3-7-21 - Joe Doyle @JoeDoyleMiLB

8 Ks in a row for Jack Leiter and this last one 98 at the top of the zone

Mack’s spin -

Leiter’s new found heater changes everything in this draft.

He is currently projected to be the first pick in the draft, ahead of him teammate, Kumar Rocker.

Current 2021 stat line through 3-7 - 3-starts, 3-0, 0.60, 15-IP, 26-K

3-6-21 - Ian Smith @FlaSmitty

Fantastic outing tonight from TCU LHP Russell Smith in the ‘21 #ShrinersCollegeClassic

6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 13 K

FB 90-92 T93, with carry, with a low 80s SL w/ tight shape and CH that sits 83-84. Missed bats with all three pitches. Plus command throughout.

Mack’s spin -

I currently have Smith as a late second day pick, but that could change if he has a great 2021 season.

So far through Sunday: 3-starts, 2-0, 1.26, 14.1-IP, 25-K

3-6-21 - Perfect Game Scout @PG_Scouting

James Wood (2021 Olny, MD) DESTROYED! The #MissStCommit just unloaded on a 3-run home run that travelled over the high bullpen wall at the Hoover Met.

Mack’s pick -

I love this kid the more I write about him, but it is being increasingly clear that he won’t be around when we pick at 1.10.

3-6-21 - Ian Smith - @FlaSmitty

Texas A&M RHP Bryce Miller follows up a strong outing against Oklahoma last week with a gem today.

FB up to 98, sitting 92-97. Mixed in a SL/CB with the latter landing at will @ 75-79. Showed a firm CH. Plus command.

7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 0 BB and Career-high 15 K

Mack’s spin -

Miller is touted as one of the top 50 college players in this draft.

I have him in the 4th-7th round range, but the results of his 2021 season could change that in an instant.

2021 stat line so far through Sunday - 3-starts, 2-0, 2.30, 15.2-IP, 27-K

3-6-21 - Zack Silverman - @ZackMatt4

Joe Rock is a young-for-the-class 6'6" lefty that sits comfortably in the low 90's with deception, touches higher, and adds a swing and miss slider. That alone makes scouts sit up, but he had a career 5.19 ERA and 41/37 K/BB at Ohio coming into the season. No in-game track record

Mack’s spin -

I’ve got Rock hovering at around the 100th pick in this draft, but, like others, his draft stat will be determined greatly by his 2021 results at Ohio.

So far through Sunday:  3-starts, 2-1, 1.00, 18-IP, 30-K

Caution: Talent on teams he is pitching to.

3-6-21 - Ian Smith - @FlaSmitty

Georgia LHP Ryan Webb is healthy and pushing himself into the top tier of college LHPs. So far, 8k thru 3 IP today with a deadly 3 pitch mix working well.

Mack’s spin -

I currently have Webb as my 72nd pick in this draft.

Current 2021 stat line through Sunday - 2-starts, 1-0, 0.00, 6.2-IP, 12-K

Lots and lots and lots of talent.

Can you imagine if one team could draft all 30 first rounders, with the caveat that they would all be on their 26 man roster for 2022? It would be interesting to see if they could rise to the challenge.

2022 would almost undoubtedly be rough. 2023 would be a very different story. 2024? Watch out.

I missed on one goy.

McCabe Brown is right now the best college pitcher and no one includimg me had him in the first two rounds.

Mack Ade said...

Stronger numbers than even Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter
