1981

Fernando Valenzuela ties the National League's rookie record for shutouts, blanking St. Louis, 5-0, for his seventh whitewash of the season. The Dodger lefty shares the mark with Irv Young (1905 Beaneaters), Grover Alexander (1911 Phillies), and Jerry Koosman (1968 Mets).

1985

In a matchup of aces that lives up its advanced billing, Dwight Gooden and Fernando Valenzuela hook up in one of the best pitchers' duel in recent memory. New York beats Los Angeles at Chavez Ravine, 2-0, thanks to Darryl Strawberry's two-run double on a day that the 20-year-old Mets right-hander strikes out ten batters, throwing nine shutout innings, while the Dodger southpaw pitches 11 innings without allowing a run.

2005

As part of the National Roberto Clemente Day celebration, teams will collect donations from fans in support of the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. Also, in remembrance of those affected by the disaster, major league players will don helmets bearing the Red Cross logo on the right side, and the number to call to help those in need will appear on the sides of the bases.

Baseball Reference:

1982 - Veteran first baseman Willie Stargell, whose uniform number 8 is retired, is saluted by 38,000 fans on his day at Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium. The 41-year-old slugger delivers a pinch-hit single in the Pirates' 6 - 1 win over the Mets.

1987:  The Dodgers beat the Mets, 3 - 2, in 16 innings, to end their losing streak at 9 games‚ the club's worst since 1973.

1989 - The last-place Phils top the first-place Cubs, 9 - 1 behind Bruce Ruffin's complete game. With the Cards beating the Mets‚ Chicago leads St. Louis by half a game in the NL East.

1998 - Atlanta OF Andruw Jones hits his 50th career homer in a 4 - 0 win over the Mets. He becomes the 3rd-youngest player in history to reach that level. Only Mel Ott and Tony Conigliaro did so at a younger age. Atlanta P John Smoltz limits the Mets to just 3 hits‚ while fanning an even dozen batters en route to his 14th win.

Baez 2 thumbs UP. Pillar too.

Nimmo sure misses a lot of time. Pillar is appreciative.

Villarreal is SCORCHING.

Alaverez and Mauricio show why they will be Mets POWER assets by OD 2023. 38 HRs between them, and remember, they started in May.

Why Mets are where they are:

130 runs less than Braves

85 runs less than Phil’s

Want to win pennant? 5 runs per game the rest of the way.

Tom sounds good but where do you have Baty in all this and do they sign Baez with Mauricio in the wings?

Plus Mauricio and Alvarez play in a park where it is hard to homer - Brooklyn.

Really disappointed to see Mauricio’s average still sitting in the .240’s. Would like to see more hits overall, and I know he has a lot of errors. He may have the tools, but those tools need refinement. Maybe the height makes it harder to cover so much strike zone?

Reid-Foley coming back; Peraza coming back; Gsellman coming back; Syndergaard coming back; that’s an awful lot of MLB talented player to add. If Nimmo and DeGrom can also heal, the Mets would be whole when they go to Atlanta for three games on October 1.

I think a copule of things are in play with Mauricio. First, the ball park which takes away extra base hits - .225/.276/.354 at home - .266/.310/.537 on the road - big difference in the slugging percentage.

Also, at 20 years old, I think he is still trying to learn the strike zone - but once he does, look out. Not playing last year really hurt.

If I was the Mets, I would have sent a contingent to Taiwan or Korea to play last year.
