B-Mets Game Notes

LAST GAME:

For the second time in as many games, Binghamton
pulled off an extra-inning walk-off win, 6-5 in 11 innings.
This time it came against Connecticut, which led 5-3
after seven innings. The Defenders plated four runs in the
sixth inning, leading to Mike Antonini’s exit. Antonini threw 6.1
innings giving up four runs and striking out eight, tying his
season high. Four men followed in relief of Antonini, ending
with Edgar Alfonzo, who got the win by throwing a scoreless
11th inning. Entering the ninth, the B-Mets chances looked
bleak facing Connecticut closer Daniel Otero, who had not
given up a run or blown a save all season. Otero struck out the
first two men before giving up three straight hits, culminating
with Jose Coronado’s infield RBI single scoring Shawn Bowman
to tie the game at five. In the home half of the 11th, Nick
Evans doubled off the left field wall to start and was followed
by an intentional walk issued to Lucas Duda. Bowman came
up in a bunt situation and bunt he did, right back to the
pitcher, Dan Griffin. However, Griffin wheeled to fire to third in
attempt to get the Evans, but threw the ball down the left field
line to allow Evans to score the game-winning run.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP:

RHP Tobi Stoner will make his
fourth start of the year for Binghamton since coming off the
disabled list May 11. Stoner gave the B-Mets 6.2 innings of
two-run work last time out, May 22, but took the loss in New
Britain’s 3-1 win over Binghamton. He is 1-1 with a 1.89 ERA
in 19 innings, including two quality starts. Last season, Stoner
made 15 starts with the B-Mets after coming up June 9 from
St. Lucie (High-A). He went 4-6 with a 4.33 ERA in 79 innings.
Stoner was the Mets’ 16th-round selection in 2006 out of
Davis & Elkins College.

RHP Henry Sosa will get the call for Connecticut in the morning
tilt. Sosa last started May 21 against the B-Mets at Dodd
Stadium in a morning game oddly enough and produced six
innings giving up one unearned run to win his third game of
the year. He is 3-0 with a 1.85 ERA in 39 innings. His ERA
ranks fifth in the Eastern League. The 23-year old Dominican
is considered the 13th-best prospect in the Giants organization
by Baseball America. He threw just 57 innings last year
between San Jose (High-A) and Augusta (Low-A).

COMEBACK KIDS:

Four of the B-Mets last five wins have come
in their final at-bat. Last night, Binghamton outlasted Connecticut
in 11 innings. The B-Mets rebounded from a 5-3
deficit, tying thing up in the ninth against Defenders’ closer
Daniel Otero, who had yet to give up a run all season. In the
11th, they walked off with the win thanks to a poor throw from
reliever Dan Griffin, the seventh pitcher utilized by Connecticut,
to allow Nick Evans to score from second on a bunt.
