B-Mets:


The Binghamton Mets scored five runs in the last two innings but could not dig out of a five-run hole in a 7-5 loss to the New Britain Rock Cats. Ruben Tejada and Lucas Duda collected three hits apiece for the B-Mets.

Tejada led off the ninth with his third single of the night off of Rock Cats’ closer Anthony Slama. Emmanuel Garcia followed with a hit and Josh Thole brought in Tejada from second on a single. Thole tried to stretch his single into a double but was thrown out by leftfielder Rene Tosoni. D.J. Wabick then followed with a double to bring in Garcia and make the score 7-4. After a Nick Evans strikeout, Duda collected his third hit to score Wabick. With the tying run at the plate, Slama induced a game-ending fielder’s choice to third off the bat of Shawn Bowman.

New Britain (21-20) tallied first with three runs in the fifth off B-Mets starter Ryan Coultas, who gave up a season-high four runs. Whit Robbins who went 3-4 added a solo home run in the sixth off Coultas to put the Rock Cats ahead 4-0.

Nick Abel spelled Coultas in the seventh and proceeded to give up three runs on four hits in 2.1 innings.

Binghamton (18-22) loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth on a single by Thole and walks to Evans and Duda by Rock Cats’ starter Matt Fox. However, Frank Mata came on to get out of the jam by striking out Shawn Bowman and popping Josh Petersen up in foul territory to the catcher.

The B-Mets loaded them again in the eighth, this time cracking the scoreboard for two runs. With the bases full on three straight hits, Petersen scorched a single to center that scored Wabick and Duda, making it 5-2.

Coultas was pinned for the loss in his six-inning outing and Fox picked up the win for the Rock Cats, going 5.1 innings for the fifth straight start.



Paul (New York): What can you tell me about Josh Thole, he's hitting .354 at double-a is he the Mets future at catcher?

J.J. Cooper: Intriguing prospect. He's got a good swing, but he's still a ways away from being a big league catcher because of concerns about his defense. The bat can play, he still has to show that the glove will allow him to make it to Citi Field.

Gnats:


The Savannah Sand Gnats needed only one hit to beat the Bowling Green Hot Rods, 2-1, in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats would split the twin-bill with the Hot Rods as they fell, 9-4, in the second game.

Eric Campbell provided the lone Gnats knock in the first game, smashing a two-run homer to left following Josh Satin’s two-out walk.

Robert Carson (3-3) threw 5.2 innings for the win allowing one run on seven hits while striking out six. Josh Stinson came in with two on and two away in the sixth and struck out John Mollicone to end the threat. He would stay in for the seventh and earn his first save of the season.

The Gnats compiled more hits in the first inning of game two than they had in the entire first affair. Jordany Valdespin led off the bottom of the first with a double and Rafael Fernandez singled right behind him. After Valdespin scored on a passed ball, Campbell singled home Fernandez to give Savannah a, 2-0, lead.

It was a short-lived lead for the Gnats as Bowling Green sparked a two-out rally against starter Chris Schwinden (2-2) in the second and wound up taking a, 3-2, lead thanks to some timely hitting and a defensive miscue by Fernandez in right. They went on to score three more in the third and would never trail for the remainder of the game.

Campbell finished the day 3-for-6 with 5 RBI between the two games.


Queens:


Can't Anyone Here Play This Game? The Mets' 10-2 run grinds to a halt with a four-game losing streak lowlighted by a five-error loss to the Dodgers. In the 11th inning alone, Ryan Church misses third base to negate the go-ahead run, while Angel Pagan and Jeremy Reed both make errors to abet the winning run. Both players are pressed into service amid injuries which knock Carlos Delgado (torn hip labrum) and Jose Reyes (calf tendonitis) out of the lineup and result in the frightful sight of Fernando Tatis playing shortstop during a game that exasperates Mets fans even more.

International:

Yu Darvish has not getting as much publicity in Japan as in year’s past, but perhaps that is because of the surplus of good young pitching in Japan right now and fans are getting used to his dominance. Yu tossed his second shutout of the NPB season to move to 6-1 as the Fighters beat the Swallows 3-0. Going into the game Yu was second in the Pacific Conference in ERA at 1.24. First is the Golden Eagles Masahiro Tanaka at 0.87. Masahiro has thrown three shutouts. Last year’s ERA winner, Tanaka’s Golden Eagle teammate Hisashi Iwakuma is lurking close behind. He has yet to toss a shutout but has an ERA of 1.65. Darvish struck out nine in his eight hit complete game win.

General:

This one was for Dad.

Just a day after the emotional .funeral for his father, Jordan Wiener threw a no-hitter Thursdayin a playoff game for Robert F. Kennedy High School. His father, Mitchell, was the Queens educator who died on Sunday night, becoming the city’s first swine flu fatality.

Jordan said that after breaking down during the funeral, he decided that he was going to pitch in RFK’s B-League first-round matchup, just as his father would have wanted him to.

“When my father was put in the hospital on (May 13), I told myself, ‘Death or survival, I was going to pitch,’ “ Jordan said. “I knew that’s what he would have wanted from me, to go out there and pitch. I was going to pitch no matter what.”
Wiener pitched five innings and .recorded 14 strikeouts to lead RFK to a 10-0 victory over Prospect Heights in the first round of the PSAL playoffs in Kissena Park. The PSAL’s mercy rule stipulates that a game ends when a team holds a 10-run lead or more after the fifth inning. RFK .advanced to Tuesday’s second round.
