Mets Minors 101: - Captain Kirk, Havens, Schwinden, Beaulac... and Jordany Valdespin

June 7, 2010

I understand that six members of the Savannah Sand Gnats were named to the all-star team, though there has been no press release from the team yet. Frankly, you could have just about named the entire pitching staff.

Yes, the Mets won yesterday, but the search for a fifth starter continues. Some feel that Buffalo’s Pat Misch should be given the next shot, but his outing yesterday (6-2-IP, 6-ER, 13-H) didn’t help his cause. My assumption is Hisanori Takahashi (3.80) will get a few more shots until possibly John Maine is re-activated.

Web site www.minorleaguebaseball.com had a wonderful feature story yesterday on CF Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who has quickly surpassed Fernando Martinez as the top outfield prospect in the system. Part of the article said:

“The California native is near the top of the Eastern League in several offensive categories, leading the circuit with 46 runs, ranking second with 66 hits and fourth with 109 total bases. He's also stolen 10 bases and leads Binghamton with 37 RBIs from the top of the order”

It’s getting increasingly hard to keep this kid down. I wouldn’t be surprised if he not only finishes the year in Buffalo, but gets a September cup of coffee as well.

AA-2B Reese Havens hit another home run Sunday, his sixth in in Binghamton and ninth for the season. The 2011 battle for second base is starting to get very interesting, especially if Ruben Tejada plays the position well in Queens during the period he is there. I still think Tejada has a good shot at replacing Jose Reyes at short, simply because 2011 is Reyes last year, the Mets have an option to get out at 500K, and, most important, he’s one of the only players on the team that could warrant a one-for-one trade for an Oswalt-type starter. I’m not calling for a Reyes trade, but a team can’t win in this sport without a dominant starting rotation. Santana and Pelfrey aren’t enough.

AA-SP Chris Schwinden got racked (4.2-IP, 5-ER, 7.32) again. He’s currently the only pitcher to bump up from St. Lucie and it’s definitely bumpy. Something’s got to give at both St. Lucie and Binghamton. Three excellent pitchers in Savannah have nowhere to go until some justified moves are made.

A ray of sunshine came from A+/SP Eric Beaulac threw up 6.0 excellent innings (1-ER, 6-K, 0-BB, 3.86). Beaulac hadn’t pitched since May 20, so it was good to see him back and pitching well.

Speaking of second base, Jordany Valdespin had three more hits Sunday and raised his BA to .321. Tejada… Havens… Valdespin… I’m telling you, this is going to be fun.
