6/7/10

New Britian 5, Binghamton 4

From Press Release:

Binghamton rallied for a run in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run in scoring position when New Britain righty Matt Williams nailed down the save, helping the Rock Cats salvage the series with a 5-4 win Sunday afternoon at New Britain Stadium. The win ended the B-Mets three-game winning streak as well as the Rock Cats eight-game losing skid. Eric Campbell roped three hits, including a double, to pace Binghamton’s 10-hit attack, breaking out of a 1-for-17 funk in the process.

New Britain tallied early and often in the first inning against starter Chris Schwinden. The righty issued a walk to leadoff man Ben Revere and then gave up singles to Steve Singleton and Brandon Roberts to fill the bases. Cleanup hitter Erik Lis followed and barely missed a grand slam with a two-run double off the wall in right-center. Yangervis Solarte rounded out the run-scoring with an RBI groundout to second, which plated Roberts, upping the lead to 3-0.

Reese Havens provided the answer for Binghamton (27-29) in the third. Campbell singled and Carlos Guzman worked a walk off Rock Cats starter David Bromberg to open the frame. After two flyball outs from the next two hitters, Havens climbed in and hit a towering shot to dead center field that cleared the wall with room to spare for a game-tying, three-run homer.

Schwinden gave the lead right back to New Britain (15-41) in the fourth. Rene Tosoni worked the count full on the California native before walloping a line-drive bomb to right-center, his fourth homer of the season, giving the Rock Cats a 4-3 lead.

The Rock Cats plated their final run in the fifth inning. Singleton doubled with one out and was plated two hitters later when Solarte dropped a single into center, advancing the lead to 5-3. Schwinden exited after allowing a single to the next hitter. He was charged for five runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings to drop his third consecutive start.

Bromberg, by contrast, shaped up after allowing the Havens’ homer. The right-hander improved to 3-4 on the year with a quality start of six innings, in which he allowed three runs on six hits.

In the ninth, Williams took the ball in search of his second save. Luis Hernandez flied out to left to start. Campbell followed with a ringing double off the wall in left and was advanced to third when  Guzman reached on Singleton’s error at second. With men at the corners and one out, D.J. Wabick pinch-hit for Mike Nickeas and lifted a sacrifice fly to left, getting the B-Mets within a run. Now with two outs, Kirk Nieuwenhuis singled to left to extend the game for Havens. However, Havens did not have any magic in his bat this time, as he flied out to left to end the game.
