Mets Minors 101 - June 8, 2010 - Matt Harvey, Jeurys Familia, F-Mart, Jordy, and Brando Moore

June 8, 2010 –

-regarding draft coverage... I'm just going to have individidual posts on each Mets draft today

-as you all know, North Carolina RHP Matt Harvey was the Mets pick last night in the MLB draft. Guys, this is a real good, safe pick. Harvey was ranked as the number one 2010 pick at the end of the 2008 season, but had a miserable season in 2009. He touches 97 but walks over 9% of the batters he has faced this year. He’s abig ground ball pitcher due to the sick sink on his fast ball. Good size… 6-4, 230… I expect him to be on the mound opening day in Brooklyn, but we’ll see…

-Mets pitching prospect, A+ SP-Jeuryrs Familia, continues to get banged around. Pitched 4.1-IP last night, giving up 6-ER, 5-BB… it just isn’t working for him this year… ERA now 6.46… all this bad Lucy pitching is holding up well deserved promotions from Savannah.

-OF Fernando Martinez played last night at St. Lucy, going 2-3. This was a pleasant surprise,e spcially after being told by someone in the organization that he might be out for the year.

-2B prospect Jordany Valdespin continues to rake, going yard for the fourth time this year. His A+ BA is now .317.

-Savannah SP Brandon Moore proved one more time he should be pitching in St. Lucie, striking out 12 in 7.0-IP and lowering his yearly ERA to 2.32.

-lastly, it's great to see that OF Jesus Feliciano gets is first cup of coffee beginning tonight. No one has earned this shot more than he has. My guess... he will stay a Mey until Carlos Beltran returns. Way to go, Jesus, and hats off to the Mets exec responsible for this move.

Mack,

Given that 4 of the ’09 Savannah 5 (Allen, Familia, Carson, and to a lesser extent Beaulac) haven’t repeated their success at Lucy, is there a question to be asked about promotion timing? Are mid year promotions (I’m thinking Moore here, Schwinden too I guess) more or less beneficial than “staying with your class?”

I don’t care about W-L, or so much about ERA either. Why the significant drop in SO/BB ratio after promotion?

Also (new subject), I note that Angel Cuan logged 4.1 IP (0.00 ERA, 0.92 WHIP) between May 4 & May 12 and nothing since. Injured? (Not on your MASH Report)

1. I'm a VERY big fan of mid-season promotions, because it gives a team the chance to get a look see at a young prospect who domintaed at one level, and now will see if he can hold up against "last year's crop" at the advanced level.

A player told me once that, when he dominated at the A level, he only had trouble with about 10 batters... the following week he was promoted to A+ and it seemed like everyone was those 10 guys...

It's a good test...

The real bad part about the Allen-Familia-Carson flop is they are pitching against the same kids they pitched against last year when all of them were in A ball.

2. Frankly, the drop in SO/BB ratio after a promotion is something I never notcied before... I'll talk to Rick Waits about that next time I se him.

3. Re: Cuan... no, no injury.... they sent him back to extended camp... just too many damn pitchers in the system right now... he'll resurface in Brooklyn.

Thanks Mack,

Could it be that the umpiring is tighter (better?) in the higher levels? (Re: SO/BB)

Looking fprward to the Cyclone season (the only MinLB I get to see). Might I see Urbana there too?

Hi again Mack!
I probably should have checked this out, before writing, but are the pitchers you wrote about from St. Lucie younger than the pitchers in Savannah? Also, I am a HUGE FAN of mid-season promotions. The only reason I wouldn't want promotions today, however, is that the Trio,(Moore, Cohoon, and Fuller),all made the AllStar team and I'd hate to see them miss out on that experience~esp. Moore~since for some unknown reason he wasn't picked for last year's AllStar team while in Brooklyn. ( I never could figure that one out.) So I'd love to see them all move up the day after AllStars~ That would be sweet! Should probably throw in a couple of those really tough relievers, too. So many deserving pitchers down there in Savannah.....
