6/13/10

Trenton 6, Binghamton 0

From Press Release:

D.J. Mitchell was unhittable for 6 2/3 innings before Mike Nickeas broke through with the B-Mets first hit, they would manage just one more the rest of the way as Trenton rolled to a 6-0 shutout victory at Waterfront Park Saturday night. Mitchell was credited with his fifth win and Chris Schwinden was slammed with his fourth consecutive loss after permitting four runs over six-plus innings of work. Trenton (37-23) got to Schwinden in the third inning. The righty walked Justin Snyder and Austin Krum to get into trouble. With two outs, Brandon Laird clubbed a hanging breaking ball out of the yard to right, putting the Thunder in command 3-0. The shot was hit 13th homer of the season and it upped his Eastern League-leading RBI total to 59. Mitchell retired the first 12 men to face him before issuing a walk to Lucas Duda starting off the fifth inning. He walked four men on the night. Nickeas finally got to Mitchell in the seventh, lining a single through the right side of the infield to break up the no-hit bid. Mitchell allowed just the one hit and struck out three over seven innings for the win.  The Thunder added to their lead in the seventh. Schwinden walked Daniel Brewer starting off the frame, forcing his exit. Roy Merritt was summoned from the bullpen and gave up a two-run, opposite field shot to the first hitter he faced, switch-hitter Marcos Vechionacci. Justin Christian rounded out the Trenton scoring with an RBI double into the left-field corner later in the inning, upping the lead to 6-0. Binghamton’s (30-32) only other hit came in the eighth off reliever Grant Duff. Luis Hernandez grounded an infield single to his counterpart Luis Nunez at shortstop. Duff worked the final two innings in scoreless fashion to finish the win. Emary Frederick pitched well in his first outing since returning from St. Lucie, offering up a scoreless ninth with a pair of strikeouts.
